Kids and family events in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, April 22-28

This week's events include a fair in Frisco, a play about a spider (and pig and other animals) in Dallas, a real Texas festival in Mesquite, hiking in Lewisville, and a spring-themed puppet show in downtown Dallas.

Starting tonight (aka Wednesday, April 22), Frisco Square will host Fair in the Square, which offers safe rides for “children of all ages”, along with all your favorite fair foods and a midway. You may want to wait until Thursday, though, as that is the only day that you can buy “All you can ride” wristbands for $30. Also, visitors who bring two unopened cans of meat products on Thursday will receive an additional discount of $5.00 off that same “All you can ride” wristband. Fair in the Square will last through the weekend.

Looking for something free? Then look no further than Richland College's presentation of Charlotte's Web, the classic book turned into a play, starting on Thursday, April 23. However, even though it's free, reservations are still required -- call 972-238-3733 to reserve your spot(s). The performance will be repeated on Friday and Saturday and will take place in Richland's Arena Theater in Dallas.

Aren't we all looking for authenticity in life? How about checking out the Real. Texas. Festival. at the Resistol Arena in Mesquite, then? The three-day festival starts on Friday, April 24 and features great musical talent, a barbeque cooking contest, battle of the bands, special rodeo events, car show, Carnival events, arts and craft vendors, delicious food and much, much more. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday will each have different music line-ups.

Kids don't seem to get nearly enough exercise nowadays, so why not take yours to the Earth Day 2009 Hike at the Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area on Saturday, April 25? Since you'll be able to do such things as look at bison, learn how to kayak, and see birds prey, we'll forgive them for being a few days late on the whole Earth Day thing.

Finally, Spring is in the Air on Sunday, April 26 at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library in downtown Dallas. Join Margaret Clauder as she presents stories and puppetry with special guest Mother Nature. And you don't mess with Mother Nature.

Kids looking for a party where they don't need to bring a present -- look no further than the Dallas Zoo's Party for the Planet. The event will be held the second weekend of Dallas Roars!, presented by Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Saturday, April 25 from noon to 5 p.m. and Sunday, April 26 from 1 to 5 p.m. The Party for the Planet celebration will feature activity booths, each with an important message about the environment and conservation. Father Earth and a Living Vine, also will wander around ZooNorth to greet guests. Professor Pflugelhorn's Ecology and Me, a magical ecology show, will teach the three “Rs” - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. This program features magic, music, games, puppets, comedy and audience participation, while teaching that going green will help the environment and everything in it.
