Texas Democrats’ e-voting suit against Dallas County to be heard by judges panel
The Texas Democrats are suing Dallas County over a nuance in e-voting between "emphasis" voting and "deselection."
When a voter uses a paper ballot and selects the straight-party option, then goes in and selects a candidate in that party in one of the races, the vote for that candidate counts. To select both methods of voting for a candidate is known as emphasis voting. However, in e-voting, if the straight party is selected and a candidate in that same party, that vote is nullified, recorded as a no-vote in the race.
The Texas Democrats contend that Dallas County never informed the Department of Justice their difference between emphasis and deselection. Dallas County said it did. A three judge panel will decide who is right.
