Sign work and road construction to close I-35E in downtown Dallas on Saturday and Sunday

— The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is allowing intermittent, rolling road closures on I-35E adjacent to downtown Dallas on Saturday and Sunday as follows:

Saturday

Contractor crews will be placing bridge beams for the new Woodall Rodgers Extension. Dallas Police will assist with the rolling closures, which will temporarily stop all traffic on the highway while bridge beams are set above I-35E. Traffic will be allowed to proceed at times between bridge beam settings. The rolling closures will last from several minutes to 10 minutes, depending on conditions.

Crews will first conduct multiple rolling closures on northbound I-35E from about 6:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. Work will then shift to the area along southbound I-35E, which will have multiple rolling closures from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Crews also will close two southbound lanes of I-35E, the inside lane in both directions on Woodall Rodgers at I-35E and the entrance ramp to I-35E from the southbound service road south of Continental Avenue. The closures will last from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The work is part of a $47.5 million project to extend Woodall Rodgers from I-35E to Beckley Avenue at Singleton Boulevard. The extension also will feature the $69.7 million Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge over the Trinity River. Both the bridge and the remainder of the Woodall Rodgers extension are scheduled to open in mid-2011.

Sunday

A contractor for the Texas Department of Transportation will close one to two northbound lanes on Interstate 35E (I-35E) and entrance ramps from Commerce Street and Reunion Boulevard on Sunday, April 26. The closures, which will occur in phases from 6:30 a.m. until 2 p.m., will allow crews to remove an overhead sign bridge and install two cantilevered overhead sign structures.

In the first phase of the project, crews will close the northbound outside lane of I-35E from Reunion to north of Commerce from 6:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The entrance ramps from Reunion and Commerce will be closed for the same six-hour period. The ramps and the outside lane will reopen after the overhead sign bridge is removed and a cantilevered overhead sign structure is installed.

The second phase of the project requires the closure of the two inside lanes from 12:30 until 2 p.m., when crews will install the second cantilevered overhead sign structure.

Message boards have been placed along the highway to inform motorists of the closure. The Dallas Police Department will assist with traffic control and lane closures.

Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes. TxDOT is striving to minimize disruptions on this important project for central Dallas while also working to improve safety, reduce congestion and improve air quality.
