North Texas Tollway Authority OKs electronic toll collection for Bush Turnpike, postpones Dallas Tollway

— At its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) Board of Directors approved two resolutions regarding the conversion to all-electronic toll collection (all-ETC). All-ETC refers to the transition to cashless toll collection on NTTA roadways.

One resolution approves a contract for the conversion of toll plazas on the President George Bush Turnpike (PGBT) beginning in July of this year. The other resolution postpones the conversion of the Dallas North Tollway (DNT) for one year, or to 2011.

"Delaying the transition of the DNT is a prudent decision that allows us to gather more information about the response to all-ETC prior to converting our busiest roadway," said Interim Executive Director Janice Davis. "It also allows us to delay about $40 million in spending during these tough economic times."

In July of 2007, the NTTA Board of Directors approved a resolution to convert the NTTA's entire system of roadways to all-ETC. Transitioning to all-ETC is expected to improve safety, mobility and air quality in North Texas, as well as reduce operating costs for the NTTA.

Awesome. Can't wait to line up behind idiots sitting at the toll booth, trying to figure out where to throw their nickels.

Horses weren't broken, either, but we're all driving cars.

Maybe we're just getting away from having to wait behind three jerks blocking up every lane trying to dig enough coins out of under their seat to go through, or getting out of the car and asking the car behind them if they could lend them a buck for the toll, and GOD JUST RUN THE DAMNED THING JESUS SOME OF US HAVE PLACES TO BE, I WILL RAM YOU THROUGH THIS TOLL BOOTH I SWEAR TO GOD

My coins are legal tender, DAMNIT! Yes, it will make the toll roads minutely faster, but it forces me to either give the toll authority my private credit/debit card information to link to a damn toll account that they charge against my license plate -OR- I have to send in a check which requires yet more money for the stamp, envelope, and the checks themselves (which also contain your personal banking information)!!!!!!!

Just to spite the NTTA, I'm going to start using 40 pennies again like I used to. They can take their "no pennies" sign and SHOVE IT!

And it's all beside the point anyway because I feel that toll roads shouldn't exist AT ALL! The gas tax was specifically implemented for road creation/maintenance/repair and it would be more than enough to pay for all current and future roads if it weren't for the fact that the money from the gas tax is constantly rerouted to other non-transportation related things. So this is double taxation! And to add insult to injury: the companies contracted for the designing/building/maintaining of these tollroads are not even American companies!! PLUS: The TxDOT is getting $1.2 billion in stimulus money to build new roads and I believe most if not all is going to TOLL road projects. That equates to TRIPLE taxation: our federal tax dollars for the stimulus, our misused gas tax money, and the tolls we pay each time we use the road from here to infinity! This is SUCH BS, nothing gets me as riled up as toll roads do. Read this following article which explains far more eloquently why toll roads are BAD: http://www.motorists.org/tolls/home/w...

Final thought: do you reeeeeally want some toll authority snapping photos of your license plate wherever you go? I'm not a paranoid nutjob (despite all evidence to the contrary)... but this just seems downright unwise.

So pay your tolltag bill in coins at the Tolltag store, swaddled in anonymizing clothes. Hell, with the pig flu epidemic on the run, nobody will think twice about someone coming in with a mask over their face.

And as far as pictures go, I don't care. I'm in public, I'm reflecting photons like crazy, and if someone wants to catch 'em, I won't stop them.

Good point about toll roads sucking on general principles, though.
