City of Denton cancels city-sponsored events due to swine influenza threat
The City of Denton is canceling several city-sponsored events over the next few days based on the most recent recommendation from the Denton County Health Department (DCHD) on the swine influenza threat in Denton County. DCHD personnel informed the City today that there is now one confirmed case of swine flu in Denton County, and two probable cases.
City of Denton officials are aware of several community events scheduled in Denton for the month of May. DCHD has informed that City that it is likely that swine flu is currently incubating in Denton County communities and may produce large numbers of ill persons in the county. Large community gatherings or group events would provide an unfortunate opportunity for the spread of this potentially fatal disease.
In order to minimize the risk of spreading the influenza virus, the City of Denton is taking the following actions effective, April 30 and will tentatively resume activities on May 11.
· Triangle and Square Dance at the Senior Center on May 1st
· Kids Rock at the Civic Center on May 1st
· Cinco de Mayo Celebration at Quakertown Park on May 2nd
· The Arthritis Fun Run in North Lake Park on May 2nd
· The May Day Walk ending in Fred Moore Park on May 2nd=
· The consignment sale at the Civic Center on May 7th- 9th
· Parks and Recreation has cancelled all field trips.
· All league play and athletic programs including Denton Youth Soccer, Denton Boys Baseball and all field rental activities will be suspended.
· All dances and large rentals in Parks and Recreation buildings are cancelled.
· All Parks and Recreation activities and free play in the McMath gym are cancelled due to the Denton Independent School District (DISD) decision to cancel all after school activities.
· The Denton Parks and Recreation Department’s After School Programs will follow the lead of the Denton Independent School District. If DISD closes an elementary or middle school, the City’s After School Program that serves that school will be postponed until the school re-opens.
The City’s Recreation Centers, Tennis Center, Senior Centers, Skate Park and the Denton Natatorium will remain open during this period.
City officials will continue to monitor the swine influenza threat in Denton and may take further steps as needed to minimize the risk of contracting this infection in our community. Citizens are encouraged to continue to monitor the city website (www.cityofdenton.com), Denton Television (DTV) and other city communications for any status changes to these events.
