DMN cuts religion beat altogether, reassigns writers
Frontburner, via GetReligion.org points to a not-so-divine development at the Dallas Morning News. The newspaper is apparently cutting its religion beat and reassigning writers Jeff Weiss and Sam Hodges to covering suburban schools.
In a letter to concerned readers back when the paper cut the stand-alone section a couple years ago, Editor Bob Mong explained that religion always had difficulty getting advertisers. Religion stories would be posted in other sections of the paper. Now that the writers have been reassigned, they are expected only to write about religious topics if their new beat gives them time to, apparently.

What a shame! I wrote my senior thesis in college about the demise of the religion section, but that was way before it actually HAPPENED. Pegasus, can you take religion under your wing too?

I don't know about Sam Hodges, but I'm surprised Jeff Weiss has not been forced to retire. If this is the same JW I met in 1978, then retirement is definitely another option. Also, consider that since the DMN became a lot more liberal over the last few years, supporting a "religion section" seems laughable.
