UPDATED: Mayfest 2009 in Fort Worth is canceled due to swine flu
A notice has been posted on the Mayfest website stating that this year's festival has been canceled. Richard Zavala, Director of Parks and Community Department is quoted as saying, "The Tarrant County Health Department, in the interest of public health and safety, has declared that all outdoor public gatherings must be cancelled."
UPDATE: According to Bud Kennedy at the FWST, there's a he-said / she-said going on between the Mayfest folk (Fort Worth) and the County over who pulled the trigger. Coincidentally, our friend and content partner Marisa Treviño from Latina Lista sent us the County's letter which could be the non-smoking gun (emphasis mine):
"Tarrant County Public Health recommends not holding organized events, like Mayfest or Cinco de Mayo celebrations, that are specifically designed to attract the attendance of Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) students, who as a group have been identified as an at-risk population."
So seems like it depends on just how strong that recommendation was.
