Sampling pizza and more at Urban Crust in Plano

— When Urban Crust, the pizza place in Plano's quaint downtown, opened in June, we took a look at the furniture, fittings, and bar. Now we're back again looking at the food.

(If it seems like a lot of attention being paid to Urban Crust, keep in mind that chef Salvatore Gisellu has a following from Daddy Jack's in Deep Ellum; that Urban Crust is doing the trendy "pizza in a wood-burning oven" category; that downtown Plano didn't have anything like this previously; and that Urban Crust hired a publicist who organized that conflicted freebie known as the media dinner. Also in attendance: a person from Quick, a person from Edible Dallas-Fort Worth, and a person from Daily Candy knock-off juli b.)

Pizzas run from $8 to $13, while the entrees run from $9 for pasta to $18 for rib eye. Salads and starters average out at about $6. Everything sampled was good, and some items were very good; no question, this would be a great place to come and get a salad and pizza.

Co-owner Nathan Shea joined the dinner and talked about the two-year journey involved in opening a restaurant in downtown Plano. From the sound of things, they sure don't make it easy.

We've been twice and the only issue was the cartoonishly small Caprese. The boy said it was the closest thing to his fav NY pizza joint-the boy does have the palate in the family. Great for a night out on the town weather you are painting it red or beige.

"Urban Crust 'Urban chips' made from sweet potato slices dusted with powdered sugar and served with creme anglaise."

Are those served as dessert?

Love the Amore pizza and since I've only been there once, that pizza got me hooked and will be back to try others. It's obvious a lot of time and money went into planning this restaurant/lounge/bar...it's just want downtown Plano needed...you can't beat the "lower Greenville" feeling you get when you're on the roof top overseeing north Dallas. It's pretty sweet...looking forward to round 2!
