Dallas and Fort Worth downtown buildings competing for construction award

1407 Main/Third Rail Lofts has been named a finalist in the Best New Construction category for the 2009 Texas Downtown Association (TDA) President’s Awards Program. The other finalist for Best New Construction is the Omni Fort Worth Hotel and Condominiums in Fort Worth. Since 1998, the Awards Program has recognized more than 150 projects, events and people that make a difference in Texas downtowns.

1407 Main/Third Rail Lofts, a glass curtain wall building, includes 84 residential units, ground floor retail, and 370 public parking spaces. The masonry façade of the parking garage is informed by the two historic buildings on either side of 1407 Main. A slender glass shaft runs the full height of the building marking the lobby entrance below and interlocking the components together in an elegant and modern composition. The project was developed by Spectrum Properties and designed by Good Fulton & Farrell Architects. In 2008, 1407 Main/Third Rail Lofts was recognized by the North Texas Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council in their annual Sustainable Showcase.

The Best New Construction award recognizes excellence in new construction in downtown or commercial districts.

Finalists will make a presentation at the Texas Downtown Revitalization Conference in Tyler on November 5, 2009. Winners will be announced at the awards gala to be held that evening.

Judging for the awards took place on Friday, July 24, 2009 in Austin. The jury panel included the following representatives: Linda Johnson, L.S. Johnson Architects (Austin), Susan Lassell, Chiang, Patel & Yerby (Austin); Josh Lasserre, Texas Historical Commission (Austin); Patricia Sharpe, Texas Monthly (Austin) and Sherri Zeitman, What’s the Big Idea? (Plano).
