Fort Worth-based RadioShack giving itself hip nickname The Shack
FORT WORTH RadioShack is launching an ad campaign in which it nicknames itself "The Shack."
It won't actually change the name of its stores. This is just to get all of us to call it "The Shack" when we head out on errands. "Hey honey, I'm going to The Shack to shop for cables and charging devices."
There are two hilarious things about this:
- 1. they're going to host a "three-day launch event" in New York and San Francisco that involves 14-foot laptops hooked up to webcams; and
- 2. the DMN says this name is "not to be confused with the Shaq who's famous in basketball circles." Really, so was there a chance of it being confused with the Shaq? When we headed out on errands, our honey might have thought we were going to see the Shaq? Even better is the DMN's explanation of Shaq: "who's famous in basketball circles." Oh OK, THAT Shaq.

And with great print advertisements like, "the shack is a big hug for your mobile life" (yes, that's real)

People still shop there?
I remember going there a few times back in middle school to pick up some resistors and crystals for an electronics project, but the last time I've gone since then, all they had was some guy who kept insisting that I needed to buy a cellphone from him, along with a plan. I smiled, nodded, and <a href="http://www.theginblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/original1.jpg">backed slowly out of the door</a>.

Oh my gosh, this is worse than the SyFy channel. "The Shack" sounds terrible! This is only going to tarnish their reputation, especially with print ads like the one Collin mentioned above.

Guess they figured that if <a href="http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/Extra/pizza-hut-changes-its-name.aspx?GT1=33009">The Hut</a> can do it, so can they.

Same here Pavel. I only go for parts whenever I have a little project to do but other than that, I hate going there. My mom loves it though which sucks.

I always go back to my grandfather's observation:
"Only your friends can give you a nickname. You can't pretend you have friends."

I was in "The Shack" last night. They are basically nothing but a big phone store. I have to say "The Shack" is about the stupidist name I ever heard.

Ya, they mostly have phones and a little bit of cameras, tvs, laptops, etc. I can't imagine why anybody would shop there for such a small selection.
