Dallas to hold second gun buy back event
In an effort to get as many guns as possible off the streets, Mayor Pro Tem Dwaine Caraway and the Dallas Police Department will hold a second Gun Buy Back and Gun Safety Event Aug. 15 from 8 a.m. to noon at Dallas City Hall. The first gun buy back event held Feb. 28 in Dallas was a success, with about 150 guns turned in. This year the goal is to collect 300 guns.
The Dallas safety initiative goal is to get as many guns as possible off the streets. “We have challenged our neighbor Fort Worth to hold a Gun Buy Back event as well,” said Caraway. “We need to work with other cities and be proactive, to increase safety in our communities.”
The event gives the public the opportunity to exchange an operational, unloaded firearm for a $50 grocery card. Participants must provide a valid identification card, no questions asked. The Dallas Police Department will provide gun safety and other crime prevention literature at the event.
Event sponsors include Schepps Dairy and Better Dallas Safer Dallas; media sponsors include 97.9 THE BEAT and 94.5K SOUL Radio One-Dallas, Univision KUVN 23, 1270AM La Voz del Pueblo, Recuerdo 94.1 FM.
