Cold Fusion Lounge brings jazz to the Square in Denton

Irony is now officially dead in Denton, folks. Until this week, the hometown of one of the most prestigious university jazz programs in the world has been sans jazz club. This is no longer the case thanks to the Cold Fusion Lounge -- a dark little hookah lounge located just off The Square. Cold Fusion will be featuring live jazz six nights a week, including the occasional romp into the jazz-infused world of blues, funk, and lighter fares of progressive rock.

While the paint dries and the first few weeks of shows are shaping up, one can't help but wonder of this new jazz joint's potential. The jazz cats are all over it, of course, but I would wager that the draw of such a chill hang could also go over well with the grown-ups rumored to inhabit Denton. (I've seen them around, usually at the bank or post office.) We can certainly expect to see plenty of the UNT giggers on the smoky corner stage, as well as returning favorites and international touring acts.

The stage reminds me a bit of Gezellig, a sort of swank hole in the wall with a great sound, and the girls slinking around the booths give the club a speak-easy feel. They've invested a great deal in the sound system to ensure the room holds the quality of sound necessary to pull off such a bold and obvious endeavor. It's silly we have only just now opened a club like this, really; and from the looks of the crowd this weekend, we're ready to make it another Denton jazz tradition.
