Dallas frozen yogurt meltdown: Yogen Fruz at Preston-Forest

6

Editor's note: As part of our series on frozen yogurt, we visit frozen-yogurt places around town and present a report, starting this week with Yogen Fruz at Preston-Forest.

Yogen Fruz frozen yogurt, blueberry flavor, with Cap'n Crunch

Opened: July 2009

Profile: Yogen Fruz' website says the chain has 1100 locations in 20 countries around the world. Also that it was founded in Toronto in 1986. Canadian. The branch at Preston and Forest is at a disadvantage in that its location in the shopping center at the southwest corner, hidden behind the Ulta store, is barely visible from the street.

Ambience: Same clean minimalism found at most fro-yo places, but with motivational posters on the wall encouraging you to chill out, etc. Typical customer seems to be North Dallas mom and tot.

Utensils: Paper cardboard cartons, yes; plastic spoons, no.

Price: $3.75 for a "small."

Yogurt: Yogen Fruz is different from other frozen-yogurt places in that 1. it's not self-serve, they dole it out for you, and 2. they do a weird mix-in thing, making it seem like a cross between a fro-yo place and Cold Stone Creamery. The yogurt comes in "plain" and then you choose a flavor such as blueberry, whereupon they throw in frozen blueberries and blend the concoction in an odd machine. Toppings such as Cap'n Crunch were expensive, up to $1 each.

Verdict: Texture of yogurt was overly cold and firm, and the flavor was muted. It's good that they're just using yogurt and fruit and you can see it being mixed before your eyes. But apparently, frozen fruit blended together with yogurt doesn't pack much flavor.

excellent suggestion, nina_chawla - it's on my list. this fro-yo series can potentially go for months, with all the places we got opening around town

I hear they are opening a new store at the Mercantile downtown. We need as much street-level retail in that area, so I wish them the best!

woa...brutal. i think you missed the mark a little, i really like this place, so no ax to grind but consider:

  • you can have soft serv style, tart with toppings, like many other shops, you're just not fighting over the sloppy topping bar and sliding on the messy floor

  • the create your flavor approach is pretty unique to froyo, choose, low fat, no-fat, no sugar added or no-fat no sugar added styles, then choose your fresh fruit(s) and mix it up. high levels of probiotics...and kosher too! personally, i love the strawberry mango combo!

  • this doesn't taste the same as all of the other yogi shops around.

  • for what you get, price is reasonable, haven't tried smoothies but they are made with yogurt too.

  • wish it was open on sundays!

i'm just sayin'...wife loves it too!
