Curious creature called zebra mussel may threaten water supply in Collin County
WYLIE Collin County residents (and others) heading to Lavon Lake anytime soon, beware: A fingernail-sized creature called the zebra mussel may be infesting its waters. They've been found in Lake Texoma, which pumps water to Lavon. If found there, the little guys endanger fish by eating all the good food, clogging water pipes, and suctioning themselves to boats.
But even more notable is that if they're found in Lavon, it's the largest supply of drinking water in these parts. Better to be safe than sorry, The Texas Municipal Water District stopped the water pumps between Lake Texoma and Lavon Lake, the DMN reports, in an effort to protect the drinking water.
Lavon supplies drinking water to 65 municipalities, including big cities in Collin County like Plano, Richardson, and Frisco.

Zebra mussels infested Lake Erie many years ago and had only one benefit...it cleaned up the pollution. In the case of Lake Erie it was probably worth it - but I doubt it will do Texas any good.
