International recording artist Herb Ohta Jr. brings Hawaiian ukelele talent to Dallas
DALLAS The tiny little instrument called the 'ukulele is making headlines, even in Dallas. Noel Tardy, co-presenter of the Lone Star Uke Fest, an annual event held every April, has fostered a community of Hawaiian music enthusiasts who gather often to share in the love of this tiny four stringed instrument.
In her efforts to bring the best to Dallas, International recording artist Herb Ohta, Jr, son of an all-time 'ukulele legend “OHTA-SAN” and one of today’s Hawaii’s finest 'ukulele virtuosos will be in town to teach 'ukulele workshops. The workshop is Wednesday, September 16 and 17, 2009 at Midway Point, 12801 Midway Road at I-635 in Dallas.
Influenced by jazz, R&B, Latin, and Brazilian music, Ohta puts his stamp on Hawaiian music by pushing the limits of tone and technique of this beautiful instrument. He started playing at the age of three and teaching at the age of 11. He now shares the music of Hawaii and the beauty of the 'ukulele with people around the world performing and conducting instructional workshops.
With eight solo albums and six duet albums in circulation and contributions on more than 40 recordings, he is well on his way to matching his father’s legacy. His latest release, “'Ukulele Journey” (LMP002), features original compositions as well as arrangements of Hawaiian standards. Guest artists include Hawaii’s top musicians Louis “Moon” Kauakahi of M haka Sons; Barry Flanagan and Nathan Aweau of Hapa; Daniel Ho; and slack-key legend Ledward Kaapana.
