New Texas law says kids up to age 8 must ride in car seats
Much to the chagrin of third-graders statewide, a new Texas law that goes into effect on September 1 requires children up to age 8 to be restrained in car seats when they go for a ride. The only exception will be for those kids with early growth spurts who have reached 4 feet, 9 inches. Fines will range from $25 to $250 for repeat offenders.
Quick show of hands: Who knew they made car seats for kids older than 5? And how many of you were allowed to roam freely in your parent's station wagon growing up? Ah, the good ol' days...

Kids up to 8 years old need to be in a car seat, but you can legally have a toddler ride on a motorcycle with nothing holding the child to the driver or the motorcycle. Now that makes a lot of sense.

What if they're riding in the back of a pickup?

Actually, better question - what if they have a hardship license or are your designated driver because I had a few too many drinks?

Whatever the occasion, ScoDo has to have a safety seat until his next birthday.

I'm sure this is a wonderful idea. However before we put this into effect can we start prosecuting or at the very least ticketing and fining the mothers of rugrats currently running free through the cars.
If you truly want to make some cash - forget the DUI checkstops and the seat belt health checks, just sit at any red light and watch the carloads of toddlers scurrying from window to window in cars through out the metroplex.
For the sake of the next generation, at the very least do what my mother did and scream till that childs little bottom is cemented into the seat and belted in (I believe it was - "This car isnt moving until your seat belt is on and you better not move until we arrive!")

Hey, if you bounce out of the bed of your dad's pick up, it's not like he's just lost his best pit bull. You deal with the loss and move on.

Just curious - why don't school buses have seat belts?

That's what the padded seat backs are for (they do still have those, right? Man, I'm getting old...).
