— Summer is over, as evidenced by the sweltering heat and steady swarm of students every where you look (unless you venture out during the school day, which I do not). The past few months have been filled with house parties and touring acts, but now it's time to transition to a more fall-friendly routine -- house parties and touring acts on The Square!

Glen Farris of Spune Productions took the helm for this year's Back to School Ice Cream Social at Hailey's, with the spirit of house shows in mind. When forming the lineup for this Saturday's show, Farris decided to form a "best of" bill featuring local house show favorites. It just so happens that the parties he frequents are haunted by some of the most acclaimed musicians around (go figure). Did I mention this show is free? And that it's B.Y.O. ice cream? Oh, and there's a free keg of Franconia available at the door -- for what I can only imagine will be a short time.

Check this:

Telegraph Canyon has spent the last few weekends supporting The Old 97s at Bass Hall and Broken Social Scene at Palladium. Talk about the cool kids at the party. Telegraph's new album, The Current and The Tide is presently number one at Good Records, beating out such indie juggernauts as The Flaming Lips and Wilco. The buzz surrounding this Fort Worth treasure is certain to take off this semester (and beyond).

Matthew and The Arrogant Sea's front man, Matthew Gray, is infamous for secret shows (read: ultimate house parties among musically-inclined scenesters). The aesthetic ease of MATAS before Telegraph will sooth your palate like hot fudge and beer. I would suggest coming out for this show even if your school days are long behind you. (Trust me, you'll be in good company in Denton.)

Baruch the Scribe, Sans Soleil, Seryn, and The Hand Combine were curated from house shows by Spune to round out the melodic Americana line-up. The effect is mellow and earthy, in keeping with the chill atmosphere (perhaps to counteract the imminent sugar rush).

Spune is doing a fine job at welcoming everyone back for the school year. Taking the best they've found at house shows around town and transplanting it to club-form in a laid back gateway "it's cool, we're just gonna hang out," will certainly make new Dentonites feel right at home. If the beer, ice cream, video games, and raffles don't do it, the music certainly will.

Well they stopped that tearing up Fry Street, and the book store is great, a much better deal then Half Price..Books,... by the way..Denton is an old Stage coach mail route, that had jug's of whiskey on the bar when the mail man came on by ... and then it too became another cotton town, these small towns are really A blessing for a place like Dallas...A/T,.. Denton, a place you can fill up your glass and laugh...And wave Brave Combo on bye...
