Dallas City Councilman Tennell Atkins to give away school supplies to area children
Dallas City Councilmember Tennell Atkins and Dallas-based discount retailer Value Giant Stores have partnered to sponsor the “Blessings in a Backpack” event from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, August 29 to provide students from Ronald McNair Elementary, J.N. Ervin Elementary, and Sarah Zumwalt Middle School with free backpacks. Many of the students come from broken homes and in some cases are being raised by their grandparents on fixed incomes.
“I believe that children should not be denied the supplies they need for school because of their economic status,” said Atkins. Free hair cuts and a hotdog cookout will also be a part of the event, which is expected to be attended by 350 students, parents, and grandparents.
