Dallas frozen yogurt meltdown: SpoonFull in Plano

14

Editor's note: Latest chapter in our series on frozen yogurt covers Spoonfull in Plano.

Opened: April 2009

Nice of SpoonFull to provide hours and phone number on the door.

Profile: First self-serve frozen-yogurt place to open in middle-class bastion of West Plano.

Ambience: Coit and Park isn't the ritziest intersection in West Plano, and this particular shopping center has a slightly downmarket vibe. Occupying a corner spot that feels a little barren, SpoonFull has the same cool/sterile atmosphere as its peers, the same small multi-colored tile around its yogurt dispensers; but its non-synchronous not-matching interior color scheme feels maybe a little amateurish? Like it was chosen by someone without design skills. The result is off-kilter and just a bit unwelcome. But the staff seems nice.

Utensils: Extra-large cups are paper cartons, which is good.

SpoonFull has five stations with 2 flavors each

Price per ounce: 35 cents -- not the cheapest but not a gouge.

Yogurt: Five machines with 2 flavors each = 10 flavors. But this is West Plano so don't expect exotic flavors other than "plain tart." Most are mainstream: chocolate, vanilla, cappuccino, blueberry, and cookies 'n' cream. The yogurt itself seems poorly handled with textural issues, as if there isn't enough turnover to keep it fresh. Toppings are the boilerplate selection you see at all of these self-serve places: fresh fruit, cereal, M&Ms, etc.

Verdict: Draw. West Plano-ites don't have to drive to Carrollton but they're stuck with candy-bar flavors. Price is not bad, but texture is not great.

It's been there for several months. It's my favorite froyo spot.

Collin Gouldin, says:

This is central plano, not west plano. There are 2 yogurtville places in west plano.

Enough with the digs against Plano.

"But this is West Plano so don't expect exotic flavors"

tell that to Jasper's, JS Chen's, Naan, & Cafe Istanbul.

sander, i'm basically quoting what they said in the store. i asked the staffer, 'why none of the cool flavors?' and the response was, "in this neighborhood, those flavors don't sell. in this neighborhood, they want the sweet flavors like chocolate."

collin, surely you know that anything west of Alma is called west plano?

Sander Wolf, says:

Certainly nothing wrong w/chocolate :)

Thanks for the clarification. You might consider revising the sentence to indicate that it's the view of the business owner, not the reviewer.

You can also say that both west and central Plano the Corolis effect is the same.

Obviously not worth going to if all can be said is of the location, not the product. I wont waste my time or money going.

Nina...Plano isn't as blah, as you would think. But if you grew up by Love Field, Plano would be a breath of fresh air...We live in a quiet neighbornood and it's not in WEST PLANO, either. Just my opinion...
