Two Dallas contestants make big impression on episode 2 of Project Runway
Dallas contestants represented on episode 2 of Project Runway on Thursday night, with both Louise Black of Dallas and Shirin Askari of Richardson/Garland finishing in the top 3 finalists. Askari came out the winner.
The challenge required that the designers make a dress for model-actress Rebecca Romijn who, at the time the show was taped, was pregnant. (She gave birth to twins in January.) Even though she was pregnant, she wanted something form-fitting.
As fretful contestant Ra'mon Lawrence observed, half the room responded by doing stretchy jerseys while the other half did tailored clothes. After angsting endlessly about the challenge, he made a tailored patchwork-type dress that reminded everyone of a bowling bag; it got him consigned to the bottom three.
Booted off the island: crazy visionary Malvin. Sad, since he seemed to be the only designer capable of providing the degree of eccentricity that makes a season memorable. His outfit -- inspired by a chicken and egg -- was awful but at least it was conceptual. The judges should've axed preppy Mitchell for the sloppy sewing job he did on his casual shorts-and-T-shirt.
Completely insane observation that only someone who watches these shows religiously might make: Did anyone notice at the end, when judge-host Heidi Klum said to Mitchell, "Mitchell: You barely squeaked by"? These shows are hugely ritualistic and she'd never said anything like that to a finalist. It brought to mind the Bravo channel's godawful Project Runway replacement that aired a few months ago, called The Fashion Show, whose horrid cast included Kelly Rowlands, former backup singer for Beyonce. It was an absolute mystery why she was there since she scored a negative-50 in terms of charisma or fashion knowledge. Anyway her one big line was the one they gave her to recite at the end to the person who came in second-lowest: "So-and-so, you are hanging by a thread." Anyway, that's exactly what this Heidi line sounded like.
As for Louise, everyone admired her handwork but the judges thought her dress looked like lingerie. Shirin won because her conservative dress-and-jacket combination were well made and because all of the judges -- which included Romijn as well as guest judge Monique Lhuillier, standing in for Michael Kors who, being a male was obviously instantly out of the running as a judge qualified to remark on maternity clothes -- said they'd wear it.

I dunno. I feel slighted somehow. Personally, culturally, artistically.
Is "Big" the word I'd use? I just don't feel like you put your heart into it. No empathy, no delving deeper into the psyches of the simmering genius, the pathos of creation, the catharsis of a basting stitch.
I don't EVEN know why I read this tripe.

OEsophagus, actually there are two project runway stories: this one (which is episode 2), and this one (which is episode 1). admittedly this is confusing, since the headlines are similar. but i was trying to address the concerns of a previous commenter who did not love my previous headline.
fyi, there will be another project runway story next friday, and probably the friday after that, unless the dallas contestants screw something up. so far, it's not looking that way now. seems like they're going to be front-runners all the way through. that's just an early guess though
