Minnesota Twins 3, Texas Rangers 2
The Texas Rangers could not come back from an early deficit Friday night, losing 3-2 to the Minnesota Twins in Minneapolis. The loss dropped Texas to 71-56 on the season.
With the loss, Texas fell to 2 1/2 games behind the Boston Red Sox in the wild card race, and 4 1/2 games behind the LA Angels for first place in the AL West with 35 games left to play.
Rangers rookie phenom Tommy Hunter was rocked in the first inning for three runs, but pitched six innings of shutout ball after that -- all for naught, as the Texas hitters continued their epic strikeout pace. Hunter fell to 6-3 and saw his ERA skyrocket to 2.95.
The Rangers lineup once again had as many strikeouts as hits and walks combined, and only a ninth-inning RBI double from David Murphy kept the game's inevitable outcome in doubt. Ian Kinsler, back in his familiar leadoff spot, was the only Ranger to get on base more than once, also managing to steal two bases in the process.
