From the music editor: Let me be your local music matchmaker

Sarah Crisman wants to help you find your new favorite band -- good news is, we won't have to look far.

Dear Pegasus readers,

I wanted to take a moment to briefly introduce myself and thank you for the outpouring of support I've received since stepping in as the new Music Editor here at Pegasus. You have been incredibly gracious. This is truly my dream job, because all I ever want to do is listen to music and write about it. I'm ready to face up to the challenge of bringing you, dear neighbor, the best of what the North Texas music scene has to offer. If we continue to unearth this wealth of extraordinary music, then I'm going to go all in and start calling myself a Texan.

While today marks my 17th year living in the Dallas area, it wasn't until I fell into the local music scene semi-unexpectedly that I really felt at home. That was when I truly became involved in the community and took responsibility for the well-being of a place I love. The music coming from our corner of the world is special, and it's selfish of us if we don't do everything in our power to make sure anyone listening (anywhere in the world) can hear this beautiful sound.

I'd like to try something with you: Tell me about the music you love -- local or international, living or dead -- and I'll match you up with a local act to complement your iTunes gallery. This is my entire purpose behind taking this job, to introduce you to your new favorite band -- and surprise, they probably live within 50 miles of you!

Here's to the music,

Crisman

I'll kick it off: I'm crushed that I'm having to miss Ben Folds in September. What local act is most likely to salve my musical wounds?

Kings of Leon, older stuff (aka Aha Shake Heartbreak - 2nd album).

Didn't really pay attention when they hit it big, but a friend who went to Ole Miss said they played a lot of campus shows and offered up the discography for a listen-through. Their hits are good too, but older stuff is more upbeat, etc.

Tix are too 'spensive these days, imo - only chance I might catch them is at a festival of some kind. Would be nice seeing some local dudes of their variety.

Scott - I'd like to take a quick stab at this one. Ha Ha Tonka (http://myspace.com/hahatonka). We're actually bringing them to The Green Elephant (5627 Dyer St.) on Wed. Sept 16th. Check out their tunes and you will definitely hear older Kings of Leon.

Hmmm, tough that it's on a Wed since we go see Yost play at Pearl - might have to split after his first set to go catch this, though.

I keep missing Urizen shows, and that makes me sad. What can I musically pound into my ear-holes in the meanwhile to get my mind off what I've missed? Bonus points if it's a local Dallas band, instead of Fort Worth.

Seeing Kings of Leon in the ACL-bands article reminded me of this thread. Just want to say THANK YOU to Travis Behl for the tip.

Not only did I check out the Ha Ha Tonka show at Green Elephant, I liked them enough to hit the following evening's show in Denton at Boiler Room. A+, will go again next time they roll through DFW (which appears to be 11/13 at Prophet Bar).

Awesome that they're playing at Emo's in Austin night before, just sucks that it happens to be a Thurs night rather than a weekend show. =(
