Tacone wrap joint opens at The Village of Allen

Thought the "wrap" trend was pretty much DOA? Thought wrong.

Tacone sells no tacos.

Tacone sells no tacos.

— Thought the "wrap" trend was pretty much DOA, but not in the Village at Allen, where California-based Tacone opened a branch in early September.

The chain was founded in Los Angeles in 1996, and has branches mostly in Southern California and the Midwest, although there are a few in the southeast as well. The menu includes "handmade" wraps (glad to hear they're not machine-made), grilled sandwiches, salads, soups, and smoothies; their signature thing is sweet-potato fries. The wraps' fillings incorporate Thai, Japanese, Jamaican, Cuban, and American Southern flavors, folded into a white-flour or wheat tortilla. The concept includes a "flavor bar" with nine sauces.

It's maybe not such a great sign that Tacone's website on google is called "Fast Food Franchise Opportunity - Restaurant Franchise for Sale." The blurb beneath it reads, "Fast food franchise, Tacone, is one of today's fastest growing food franchises. Explore a Tacone franchise opportunity and take the first step to becoming..." It stops there, but you get the idea.

With a name like Tacone, you might conclude that tacos are on the menu, but you would be wrong. A helpful employee at the Allen store said that no, they don't sell burritos, despite what many people assume, and that their food, with items such as the Great Gobbler grilled sandwich and the barbecued chicken quesadilla, is healthy. Too bad it's all served on styrofoam, which is not so healthy for the planet.

Tacone was a rapper with a poor grasp of spelling.

Dictionary.com: "bur⋅ri⋅to: A flour tortilla wrapped around a filling, as of beef, beans, or cheese."

Why the distancing from burritos? Am I supposed to be more impressed that I am eating a wrap and not a buritto?

Tacone - The History of a name (from the website)

Literally, Tacone® means "a taco in a cone." Founder Craig Albert was on vacation in Costa Rica and came across a quirky street vendor that sold tacos in an unusually shaped tortilla. Serendipity struck and when Craig returned to California he opened the first Tacone®, selling cone-shaped tacos. It turned out to be a bit messy and impractical, so we stopped selling these unique tacos, but the name that inspired us stuck.
