UPDATED: Garland Boy Scouts feel duped get paid by Bass Pro Shops

...and to assume that Bass Pro Shops will pay me minimum wage when I don't have it in writing.

...and to assume that Bass Pro Shops will pay me minimum wage when I don't have it in writing.

Some Garland Boy Scouts and their parents are upset at their local Bass Pro Shops after the store offered them a $100 gift card for work they provided over the Thanksgiving weekend instead of the hourly minimum wage they expected. Despite the lack of a written agreement, the Scouts assumed they would be paid the standard rate of $6.55/hour, which would've meant more than $1,600 for the 248 hours they put in. Bass, of course, is saying they never agreed to such payment.

Kind of seems like an odd "fundraiser" if you ask me -- whatever happened to bake sales or selling candy bars?

UPDATE: Look what a little media publicity can get you: Bass Pro Shops has agreed to pay the Boy Scouts $1,500 for their work. The company actually offered the money yesterday, but the Scouts did not receive the offer until today.

edsops, says:

Good for Bass Pro Shops.

And a lesson for those parents: If you're expecting someone to pay you $1600, you might think about getting something in writing first. Be prepared and all that.

Bass Pro Shops might want to take a lesson here too...
