Gay List Daily’s February 2009 theater recommendations

This month, we’ve decided to take a page right out of My Fair Lady and introduce you, our street-smart, rough-around-the-edges readers, to some of the other forms of art gracing the stages throughout North Texas. So, we’ve reached deep into our Mary Poppins bag of tricks to present ballet, opera and even burlesque. Everybody ready? Pinkies up, fake British accents on (just pretend you’re Madonna) and away we go.

Balletweiners: Les Ballets Trockadero De Monte Carlo

Friday & Saturday, February 6 & 7, 8:00 p.m.

Tutu. Yeah. Beep Beep. But no bad girls here, just some very muscular ballerinas with pronounced Adam’s Apples mixing together the joys of campiness with the precision of ballet. The “trocks,” as they are known by their legions of fans, bring comedic timing to masterful works like Swan Lake and Giselle, all while being perched en pointe in size 13 toe shoes.

Shimmy, Shimmy More: Dallas Burlesque Festival

Saturday, February 7, 10:00 p.m.

You gotta have a gimmick, if you want to get people over the river and into the Texas Theatre for an evening of entertainment. Seems like this is the perfect draw, scantily clad ladies for the straight boys and lesbians and really sweet dance moves for the gay boys to break out the next time “Single Ladies” comes on. The evening starts with a live “pin up” photo shoot. We’ll be the ones with a strategically placed muff. Tee. Hee.

Pillow Talk: One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest

One of the best things about being a Producing Artistic Director of your own theatre means you get to play all the meaty roles. It’s kind of like being Kim Jon Il for the thespian set. Such is the case with Sue Loncar who has graced the stage at the Contemporary Theatre of Dallas as a leading lady in productions of Steel Magnolias, Lone Star/Laundry & Bourbon and now as the infamous Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. If we had that kind of power, we certainly wouldn’t opt for a role that required white orthopedic shoes. Blech.

Sondheim Meets Springer: The Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife

Opens Friday, February 13

Sordid Lives writer/director Del Shores brings all things Ding Dongs and doublewides back to the stage with the mounting of this “tragicomedy about domestic violence.” And really, what’s funnier than domestic violence? Never mind. But it is set to music. So put on your best wife beater, hmm, poor choice of words… put on your best sleeveless white under shirt, crack open a can of PBR and some Easy Cheese and let the fun begin.

Rent, Old School: La Bohème

Runs Friday, February 13 through Sunday, February 21

Long before Angel and Mimi struggled to find their way in the East Village for Broadway audiences, Puccini wrote an opera about the loves and loss of bohemians in 1830’s Paris. Even if you’re not an opera fan, it’s a chance to look EXTRA gay clutching those tiny binoculars on a stick.
