Rather-unfortunately-named Cake Ball Company opening Dallas factory in Lake Highlands

— Cake Ball Company opens its factory in the Lake Highlands district of Dallas tomorrow, says Kim P. on Eats.

Cake balls are golf-ball-sized circular confections made from cake and frosting. This story describes them as being made "by combining crumbled baked cake with frosting, rolling the mixture into balls, and covering the balls with confectionery coating". Eeesh, sounds sweet, like a cake version of a truffle. It's not a cheap treat; if you visit the Web site, you'll see that six cake balls go for $16. First cupcakes, now cake balls. Anyway, rah rah for opening in Lake Highlands.

You may want to reserve judgment until you try a delectable cake ball. There are a bite of heaven and completely addictive. Plus, they are also available on the Neiman Marcus website so the name must be ok with them. Like truffles, they are handmade which makes them a little more expensive but worth every penny. Give them a whirl. You won't be disappointed.

They are also called 'cruffles' like cake truffles, and lighter tasting that the ubiquitous rum balls. Not too bad a use for leftover cake if you are in a bakery...there is always left over cake tops from torting cakes. Of course these entrepreneurs are baking their cake to make the cake balls, I guess...

dolci, i can see it for someone who likes frosting. i happen to like cake, not frosting. don't really like cupcakes, either, for the same reason. too much frosting, not enough cake
