TCU Track and Field signs seven newcomers for 2009-2010

Inking with the Flyin' Frogs were two men and five women.

TCU track and field coach Darryl Anderson announced the signing of seven newcomers to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday.

"On the women's side, we are going to have a big class that is going to be the future of our program. We really feel good about the women we have coming in," said head coach Darryl Anderson. "On the men's side, we went for quality not quantity and we think that we signed two guys that will help us move forward immediately. Both Charles Silmon and Cameron Tabor are big-time recruits for us. Overall, the recruiting process is ongoing, but what we have up to this point is very good."

Inking with the Flyin' Frogs were two men and five women. Signing for the 2009-10 school year were Charles Silmon of Waco, Texas (Waco H.S.), Cameron Tabor of Norman, Okla. (Norman H.S.), Quintera Charles of Houston, Texas (Westfield, H.S.), Unique Conner of Las Vegas, Nev. (Western H.S.), Larissa Matthews of Chandler, Ariz. (Chandler H.S.), Sara Talley of Calhoun, Ga. (Gordon Central H.S.) and Tricia Terry of McAllen, Texas (McAllen Memorial H.S.).

Silmon comes to TCU following a standout career at Waco High School in Waco, Texas. Overall, he collected runner-up honors in the 200 meters at the Texas State Championships, clocking a time of 21.02, which is the fifth-fastest 200-meter time in the country. In the 100, Silmon's personal-best is 10.54 seconds.

"Charles will add to the strong sprinters that we already have within our program. He will be an individual that should be a national qualifier for us in the future in both the relays and sprints," said Anderson.

Tabor, a Norman, Okla., native, will don the Purple and White next season after placing fifth at the 2008 Nike Nationals in the shot put. Tabor, who is a two-time state champion in the shot put and three-time state champion in the discus, is currently the Oklahoma state record holder in the shot put with a toss of 63 feet, 1 ½ inches. A former Texas Relays and Greater Southwest shot put champion, Tabor has the second-best throw in the nation in the discus and the fifth-best toss in the country in the shot. Finally, the 2007 US World Youth team member has recorded a personal-best toss of 64 feet, 5 ¾ inches in the shot put and 203 feet, 5 inches in the discus. Tabor brings to TCU a solid pedigree as his father Paul played professional football for the Chicago Bears.

"Cameron is a big-time recruit. Coach Kenneson did a wonderful job in adding him to an area that is going to be a strong point for us now and in the future. We are excited to have him," said Anderson.

Charles, a Houston native, closed out the 2008 high school season crossing the finish line in fourth-place in the 400 meters at the Texas State Championships with a time of 54.69 seconds.

"We feel like Quintera can come in and not only be a conference level girl for us, but be someone that is going to contribute on the national level with our 4x400 relay, while also being a regional qualifier and national level girl for us in the 400 meters," said Anderson.

Connor, who comes from the same high school as current Flyin' Frog and All-American Dell Guy, will compete next season in Fort Worth after winning the Nevada State Championship in the 400 meters as a sophomore. Conner's has posted a personal-best time of 54.73 in the 400 meters and collected runner-up honors last year at the state meet in the 400.

"We feel like Unique can come in and compete on a national level with our 4x400 relay and in the 400 meters just like Quintera," said Anderson.

Matthews will bring a wealth of hurdle experience with her to the TCU campus next fall after winning the Arizona State Championship in the 100 meters, 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles. Matthews currently ranks in the top-10 in the country in the 100-meter hurdles with a personal-best time of 13.84 seconds. The Chandler High School sensation has posted a personal-best time of 43.42 in the 300-meter hurdles.

"Larissa is the second-best hurdler in the country and we are very comfortable with her. She is very serious with what she is trying to do and will do good things for us in the future," said Anderson.

Talley, a multi-sport athlete at Gordon Central High School in Georgia, will compete for TCU in both the shot put and discus next season. Talley collected the 4A Georgia State Championship in the shot put, while also earning runner-up honors in the discus at the state meet. She has posted personal-best tosses of 44 feet, 4 inches in the shot and 140 feet in the discus. The future Frog has also excelled in the classroom as she is a member of the National Honors Society. Off the field, Talley is a starting forward on the Gordon Central basketball team, while also competing for the cross country team.

"Sara is a girl that is a state champion in both the shot and discus. We feel that she can come in and develop like Candis Kelley and Stormy Harrison have for us. Overall, we feel really good about her possibilities," said Anderson.

Terry rounds out the 2009 TCU class having earned regional cross country champion honors twice during her time at McAllen Memorial High School in McAllen, Texas. The two-time 5A runner-up in the 1600 meters, has posted a personal-best time of 5:01.40 seconds in the 1600, while also clocking a personal-best time of 10:56.36 in the 3200 meters. Finally, Terry has recorded a time of 18:00.05 seconds in the 5K while competing in 5A competition.

"Tricia has been state runner-up at the Texas state meet twice and we feel like she will be an individual that will help us not only in cross country, but also on the track. Tricia will be able to help us at the conference level and allow us to have a face in the distances in the Mountain West Conference," said Anderson.
