Coppell offers Master Composter training

For all those who would like to be certified through the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality as Master Composters (and - honestly - who wouldn't?), the City of Coppell is offering a three-day instructional course.

A crude attempt at composting. Honestly, whoever's responsible for this mess should take the course.

All kidding aside, anyone interested in achieving a sustainable backyard lifestyle will benefit from the training - certification or no certification. Homemade compost is the Philosopher's Stone of natural gardeners - just ask one.

Set for Thursday and Friday, Feb. 26 and 27 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and continuing on Saturday the 28th from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., the training - which includes both classroom and outdoor, "hands-on" instruction (though I imagine gloves are allowed) - will take place at the Coppell Service Center at 816 S. Coppell Rd.

The $40 registration fee includes a compost bin (worth $50 all by itself), the Rodale Book of Composting, the Green Guide to YardCare booklet and lunch on Saturday. Instructor Larry Wilhelm is one of the founders of the Master Composter program in Texas and teaches composting world-wide.

To complete one's certification (and take possession of a personal compost thermometer - which looks an awful lot like a meat thermometer, judging by this one), 20 hours of volunteer community service educating others in the benefits of compost is required.

To register, call Coppell Parks and Rec at 972-462-5100, or register online via Rec!Connect.
