Gay List Daily’s must-do events: February 5-8, 2009

0

Our weekly calendar is somewhat like a Crock-Pot filled with lots of different ingredients that all sound really strange, but somehow turn into something delicious. Well, this week is no exception. We’ve got everything covered from a performing pianist (if you say that out loud it’s funnier than it looks), a leather contest, a former American Idol in town to spread cheer and sunshine, and a chance at free food for a year. All you have to do is follow our yellow brick road of fancy happenings.

Tickling His Ivories: Gustavo Tolosa Valentine's Day Piano Concert

Saturday, February 7, 7:30 p.m.

We didn’t have the heart to tell Dr. Tolosa that Valentine’s Day is on the 14th, but what’s a week early when it comes to love? And you’ll really lurve hearing this man play love songs from around the world along with Ricardo Paz on violin and viola, and professional soprano Melinda Imthurn on electric accordion. KIDDING! She’s singing! Ticket price includes delicious South American cuisine, wine and more. This is in a private residence, so please call for complete details and directions.

Tickets: $35; (214) 789-6677; www.born4piano.com

Use Some Moisturizer For God’s Sake!: Mr. Leather Texas Contest 2009

Saturday, February 7

Taking care of your skin is really important, but if you’ve spent a lot of time in the sun and have the complexion of tree bark, well Mr. Leather might be the contest for you. Oh, wait. What? Mr. Leather is for men who wear leather? Well now that makes a lot more sense! If you like the look and feel of rich Corinthian leather (R.I.P. Mr. Montalban!) on a guy, then there’s only one place to be this Saturday night and that’s the Dallas Eagle. Contestants will be scored on their interviews with the judges and a speech, but it’s the Jock/Physique portion that puts a hush over the entire room.

Who Doesn’t Love A Singing Pussy?: CATS

Tonight through Sunday, February 8

Ah, CATS. One of the great mysteries of the modern world. We personally can never make it past intermission, and God knows we’ve tried, but somehow people can’t get enough of this shit. So if you’re a card-carrying fan of Mr. Mistoffelees and Princess Gigglesquirt or whatever the hell she’s called, we’re not here to judge you. We’re here merely to observe your behavior and record it in our scientific journals for the study of mankind by alien life forces from the future. Don’t mind us. Go on. Clap. Clap for the kitties!

Tickets: $30 - $75; Bass Performance Hall, Fort Worth; www.casamanana.org

Dorothy, The Explorer: Oz the Musical

Opens Saturday, February 7, 7:00 p.m

Is there anything gayer than the Wizard of Oz turned into a musical? And with all those “If I only had a ____” songs, wasn’t the original technically a musical anyway? We’re confused now. But Diana Degarmo, the spunkiest, pluckiest American Idol ever is here to set things straight both with us and in the land of munchkins and flying monkeys.

Tickets: $22 - $77; The Majestic Theatre, Dallas; www.liveatthemajestic.com

Eat, Drink And Be Full And Tipsy: Lunch for an entire year at Kent Rathbun’s new restaurant

Sign up now through February 15

Now we know this isn’t actually an event per se, but we think you should know about it all the same. Kent Rathbun, celebrity chef behind two of our favorite restaurants, Abacus and Jasper’s, is launching a new restaurant concept. And to celebrate, he’s offering one lucky winner the chance to attend all three VIP opening parties, plus lunch for two every week for an entire year! Sure as hell beats those freaky Healthy Choice micro-boil-your-own-pasta things you keep in your desk drawer. All you have to do is sign up to receive their newsletter and the prize could be yours. But really, we hope it’s ours. Unless you take us with you. Then we’re happy for you to win.
