Photo gallery: pinup shoot at the Dallas Burlesque Festival

12

Consider this a teaser.

Videographer Mike Bullock and I attended the first-ever Dallas Burlesque Festival Saturday night (Feb. 7) at the historic Texas Theater in Oak Cliff. The place was packed. Judging by the attendance and enthusiastic response to the event, there's a healthy interest in burlesque as a performance art here in North Texas.

Or maybe people just like looking at pretty women in abbreviated attire. (Or both.)

The actual burlesque acts were preceded by a model photo shoot, staged for a group of very lucky photographers.

So, while Mike and I work up the video edit (which will require a great deal of dedicated post processing - oh, the drudgery!), here's a teaser gallery of photos taken during the preliminary event.

Several years ago I went to a Rancid show in a warehouse. It was in the midst of a deep winter and when it was all over, I looked down and saw in the snow a busted off toenail likely from some girl stupid enough to wear an open toed shoe to the show next to a cracked Casio G-Shock. At the same time I realized that although my vision was fine, my hearing was fairly impaired. It took several days before the ringing would subside. Since, earplugs.

I wouldn't have anticipated needing the same for the DBF. We forewent Mark Farina in trying to give some local love.

The acts at this show varied in style and quality, but overall props to all the girls who spent the time to perform.

I felt badly for the girls for the terrible stage direction situation including the absolute ear-bleeding volume of the terrible interlude music. Besides that there seemed to be some problem with the set lists as acts were introduced out of order. Also, with the out of focus back lit screen it was some times kind of hard to see.

Perhaps encouragingly, the turnout was fantastic. However, considering the people along the walls and sitting in the aisles I had to wonder the potential consequences of either fire marshal arrival or disaster.

Listen, I may have many social phobias but being trampled while suffering an inhalation injury under a stampeding crowd of Dos Equis fueled bearded guys calling themselves "the Rickster" is less a phobia than it could have been an unpleasant reality.

Overall, a good effort. Hopefully they can work out some kinks and do it again.

<p>Gotta agree with you about the music, DC. My ears are still ringing.</p>

<p>Should have worn my <a href="http://www.hearingaidmuseum.com/gallery/Miscellaneous/Other%20Items/info/LeeSonicEarValves.htm">Lee Sonic Ear Valves</a>. (Who knew?)</p>

This is a pretty good event from the looks of adds going around town, and from the looks of the Peg photo shot, but Jefferson Blvd was just packed on Saturday all along the strip, it is a latin exchange community and so how will a show like this go over...A/T, Urban observer..

Yes, the music was annoyingly loud. Perhaps a contributing factor of the sound malfunction? Hopefully, next year’s show will run smoother.

It is still hot stuff to gamble on the old Jefferson Blvd.... and invite the Lee Harvey girls, until then....A/T, Life on the Trinity, without a bathing suit.

A great night by anybody's standard. Much props to Elisa and her girls! Unfortunately I see several more fest on the horizon and it seems doomed to be the latest trend. Anybody remember the swing dance craze or the homebrew craze? Both were well intentioned tips of the hat towards days gone by. Thye got up and running and then crashed not long after everyone got on the wagon. I'm just saying enjoy it while you can.
