Fort Worth City Manager takes students under his wing

Students from Fort Worth ISD’s Handley Middle School will be guests of the Fort Worth City Manager at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. The meeting will be at 3:00 p.m. on February 11, 2009 in City Hall.

City Manager Dale Fisseler is a member of a Civil Engineering Advisory Board at the University of Texas – Arlington. Late last year Handley Middle School teacher Janice Pratt called the Board asking for a volunteer mentor for her students. The students were getting ready to participate in the National Engineering Week Future Cities competition. Fisseler took the job.

“I wasn’t really sure what I was getting into at first,” Fisseler said. “But once we got going I was really impressed with how hard they worked and how much time they put into the effort.”

This year’s Future Cities project was to design a sustainable residence that is totally self sufficient in providing its own water supply and does not depend on municipal sources.

Students at FWISD’s McLean Middle School won the regional competition and a free trip to Washington D.C. later this week. But the students from Handley will get a surprise when they arrive at City Hall tomorrow. Fisseler is hoping to present each student with a $25 gift card…just as soon as he clears it with his wife.

“I enjoyed the time I spent in class with these students,” he said. “Next year we’ll work on another project together. I’m looking forward to it.”
