Galvan Promotions brings boxing back to Dallas
Galvan Promotions has quietly built a name for itself based on small, yet highly reputable stable of acclaimed fighters.
Since breaking onto the scene here in North Texas a little over a year ago, Galvan Promotions has quietly built a name for itself based on small, yet highly reputable stable of acclaimed fighters. Based out of Fort Worth and headed by local boxing fixture George Galvan, Galvan Promotions has already staged two well received promotions in the DFW area with his third promotion scheduled for this Saturday night at the Eddie Deen's Ranch in downtown Dallas.
The card will be a pro-am promotion, blending amateur boxing with that of professionals. The reason for such a decision was an easy one to make for Galvan who posses an unwavering support and appreciation for the local amateur scene here in North Texas. The decision to include amateur fights was of genuine intent and not simply as cheap filler they way some pro-am cards are structured.
“I told these kids I would put them on one of my cards,” Galvan explains. “They didn’t believe me but here we are.”
Galvan further demonstrates a commitment amateur boxing by setting up his own scholarship fund in an effort to entice kids into pursuing a college degree. “We are going to award our first $1,000 scholarship at the show,” Galvan said.
But things have not exactly gone smoothly for Galvan as this card was being assembled. WBC Youth Super Featherweight champion Jose “El Loco” Hernandez was slated to defend his newly acquired title before a knee injury suffered in training forced the respected fighter to be scratched from the card. As if that wasn’t a damaging enough blow to Galvan’s card, the co-featured main event that would have seen slugger Americo Santos’ much anticipated return to the ring after taking a year off due to injury was scratched when a work related injury forced the Garland fighter to withdrawal from the card.
Through it all Galvan has maintained an upbeat attitude. At a time when most promoters would be close to jumping off the ledge, Galvan seems to take everything in stride. Choosing to focus more on the positive aspects of his February 14 show, Galvan is quick to point out that even thought his two main event fighters fell through, there are still a number of talented local fighters fighting on the card.
One such fight is a rematch between flyweights Joel Hernandez and Rafael Casias both of Fort Worth. Their initial encounter back in May was an all-action affair that displayed the spirit, determination, and brutality that makes up a great fight. Expect to see more of the same as both fighters have a knack for brawling.
