Rowlett launches live 24/7 streaming broadcast of city’s cable access channel
ROWLETT After almost a year of providing on-demand video of City Council meetings and special programs on Rowlett.com, the City of Rowlett has launched the live, 24/7 streaming broadcast of the City’s cable access channel.
Now, citizens who do not subscribe to cable TV may watch Rowlett TV Network (RTN16), the City’s cable access channel, 24 hours a day. With a click of a mouse on the City’s web site, viewers may watch all regular programming on RTN16 including City Council meetings, City Council Work Sessions, special programs and continual information scrolls.
“Open government and communication are high priorities for the City and this system compliments our efforts,” said City Manager, Lynda Humble. “With this new service of streaming the channel 24 hours a day, we are able to enhance public communication and provide more information about the City anytime day or night. It’s all about providing quality customer service and improving communication with our citizens.”
The City launched “on-demand” video in May 2008 with the goal of providing residents with the rebroadcasts of all City Council meetings, Council Work Sessions and other special programs. This new service takes that to a new level by providing a portal to the TV access channel without having to be a local cable subscriber.
“Now, citizens don’t need to subscribe to cable to see RTN16 programming,” said Donna Huerta, Communications Manager. “In fact, they don’t need a TV at all. All they need now is a computer and Internet access to enjoy this service which will provide greater access to city government and essentially City Hall.”
Prior to the implementation of streaming video, RTN16 was provided only to local cable subscribers on Time Warner or Verizon.
Several years ago, in an effort to improve open government and to go “green”, the city began providing electronic copies of meeting agendas and minutes on the city’s web site. Now, with the on-demand video or the new 24/7 streaming broadcast of RTN16, citizens have even more instant access to information.
Following is a schedule of the programs offered on RTN16, which may now be viewed from the City's Web site.
