Barnett Shale turns out to be huge polluter in Dallas-Fort Worth, huh, whaddya know
A study for the Environmental Defense Fund finds that the Barnett Shale is generating as much smog as all the vehicles in North Texas.
For 2009, it's estimated that Barnett Shale will spew an average of 191 tons of volatile organic compounds every day, but peaking during the summer at 307 tons per day. Cars, trucks, and buses in Dallas-Fort Worth are expected to emit 273 tons of volatile organic compounds a day.
The report says that there are easy methods to reduce emissions.

Don Lokke, says:
I got a copy of the original report. It would be valuable to critically read what it says. Projections should not take the place of on-going scientific samples and monitoring of actual conditions. Accurate, balanced, investigative reporting would have reported the fact that Barnett Shale operators lead the nation in monitoring and eliminating any adverse environmental impact of producing natural gas and oil from the Barnett Shale. Their contribution to lowering America's dependence on foreign energy resources and the production of a clean burning fuel should be recognized and supported.

Crushski, says:
Barnett Shale drilling's contribution to DFW's ozone non-attainment status is enormous. The biggest irony is the industry currently promoting converting cars and buses to natural gas (for their own profit) even as they continue to pollute using diesel engines for their own operations. The benefits of clean burning natural gas are offset by dirty drilling emissions.
