Franki’s Li’l Europe in east Dallas is officially toast

8

— An email forwarded from a food-savvy man about town brings the news that Franki's Lil Europe in Casa Linda Plaza in Dallas closed this weekend:

We would like to say thank you to the loyal customers that have supported us throughout the many years as well as the newcomers that we were just getting to know. We, like many others, have become a casualty of the times. We will continue to cater so if you, or anyone you know is looking for a caterer, please keep us in mind. Our website will soon be reorganized to exhibit our catering focus. For information call (214) 336-4426.

Thank You for the Great Number of Years and a Happy Tomorrow to You All.

The restaurant, which first opened on September 17, 1987, had been sputtering in the past few months, with a brief closure in November. Its final day was February 14, Valentine's Day. Sniff.

Always sad to see an owner-run place bite the dust. He is a very nice guy!

The downfall might have been a result of the stuff he has been turning out lately. My wife and I ate there about six months ago and not only was each dish mundane, it was just plain crap. We said, "Nevermore."

My wife and I went there for the first time recently and really enjoyed it, but there was hardly anyone else there so this isn't a complete shock. Still, very sad news.

The next trend will be towards higher quality, smaller portion, neighborhood places that are not chain factory foods.

Too bad the owners of FLE couldn't find a format to meet the new emerging consumer demands.

The longer term trend will be more failures untill such time that Landlords lower threshold rent levels, allowing independents to make a go of it.

We live close enough to walk to Franki's and used to enjoy it when founder Franki Kovacic ran the place. However, the last time we had dinner there, maybe three years ago, the entree I ordered was so awful that I sent it back -- something I almost never do at a restaurant. I ordered something else, and it too was inedible. So I ended up eating nothing but the dinner salad. Needless to say, we never went back.

I returned with a crew not long ago to show support and got the impression it was under new ownership. The trains near the ceiling were gone, the whole 'it' felt changed. The magic was missing completely. It now felt no longer like a neighborhood intimate cafe but rather a strip mall restaurant anywhere. This at the end of the Casa Linda 'redo' that demolished everyone's access for months.

Per the tic tock of closures everywhere: My heart aches when I watch the death march as a restaurant strangles to an inevitable death. I drive past some places and my heart gets so heavy seeing maybe three cars in their lot when it's a Friday night.......... knowing those may belong to the owners and workers. I know that within those walls and behind the scenes, people are losing their life's investment and their dream and future.

As for Franki's, I remember being there one New Year's Eve when life was chaotic and the joint was jumping. My best wishes for all concerned.
