The MAC is proud to present two new exhibitions featuring the works of Olin Travis: "People, Places and Visions" in the large galleries and Angilee Wilkerson: "The History Series", a contemporary photography show in the new works space. The MAC will host an opening reception Saturday, February 21st from 5:30 - 7:30 pm at 3120 McKinney Avenue in Uptown Dallas. This exhibition will run through March 28, 2009.
"People, Places and Visions" is a comprehensive look at four decades of work by Olin Travis, Dallas' first artist to receive a major national art program. After returning from the Art Insitute of Chicago, where he was trained by Kenyon Cox and Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida, among others, Olin Travis completed a strong group of paintings that included symbolism, fantasies, portraits and landscapes during the next forty two years. This exhibition features paintings that were executed between 1915 and 1955.
Beginning in 1999, The MAC recognized the importance of not only focusing on current trends in the art world but also looking back to the historical roots of the art community in Texas. "In Context", (Contemporary Art in Dallas: 1889-1940) curated by Eleanor Jones Harvey, was our first exhibit featuring early Texas Art. This exhibit was well received and was followed by three additional exhibits including "A Symphony of Shade and Light: Frank Reaugh and His Students" curated by Michael Grauer in 2001; "Mary Bonner and Women Artists of Her Time", curated by Angelika Jansen-Brown in 2002 and "Otis Dozier" curated by Sam Ratcliffe in 2004.
Olin Travis was not only the first Dallas artist to receive a full and formal art education at a major art institute, he also founded his own art school, trained young artists that received national and international acclaim, and helped create what was to later become the Dallas Museum of Art. Travis was a great artist and teacher, with a vision of establishing Dallas artwork on a national level by training and exhibiting great artists in our community.
The new works space will feature the photographs of Denton based artist Angilee Wilkerson. The exhibition will focus on both new and old works from her History Series and will coincide with the 46th Conference hosted by The Society for Photographic Education being held in Dallas this year between March 26th and 29th. Wilkerson lives and works in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and holds an M.F.A. in Photography from Texas Woman's University. She is an artist, educator, and professional editorial photographer and is represented by Bering and James in Houston. . Her work frequently examines memory and identity, family narratives, and the nature of alterity through landscapes. The artist has participated in more than 30 national and regional exhibitions since 2002, including seven solo shows. Most recently her History Series was exhibited at the Luzanky Gallery in the Czech Republic.

Olin Travis is one of the great Texas artist from the 20th Century, he would surpass Julian Onderdonk and Jerry Bywaters in the 1980s, as an artist who had great merit and style, this show has been on delay as an exibit for Dallas for Quite some time and so it is really worth seeing, the essence of Dallas and Texas in terms of Modern Classic art of the 20th Century school...A/T,..Urban Art Observer.
