487 eligible productions. Over 75 theater companies from all over the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Hundreds of eligible "possible" nominees. That is what voters had before them in choosing their choices for the 2009 COLUMN AWARDS.

Executive Director/Producer/Founder of THE COLUMN AWARDS John Garcia and the Board of Directors is extremely proud and honored to announce the official nominees for the 2009 COLUMN AWARDS.

THE COLUMN AWARDS honors excellence in Theater within the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.

THE COLUMN AWARDS is also the only awards organization in the United States that serves as a major fundraiser for BROADWAY CARES/EQUITY FIGHTS AIDS. They donate all proceeds (after operating expenses) to BC/EFA.

Voter turn out this year was the highest ever in the ten year history of THE COLUMN AWARDS. It did not just double, it quadrupled. So much so, that the final voting day's deadline was extended to accommodate all those last minute votes.

But the voting is done and the theatrical community has spoken.

"The Board of Directors and I are blown away by the voter turn out this season" Garcia stated. "We've never seen it like this before. I think this season people were truly passionate on having their personal choices of what they thought was the best to be nominated this year."

Garcia went on to say, "The Board and I are so thrilled as well to see how the nominations were spread all over the metroplex. It is so exciting to see so many theater companies in the mix this year!"

"I sincerely hope the nominees grasp the meaning of what their nomination symbolizes" Garcia said, "There were so, so many eligible people in each category-all deserving & award worthy. Now add to that mix the highest voter turn out ever. If you received a nomination, I hope they realize that it was the entire theatrical community that voted their work as the best. Your very own peers." Garcia concluded with, "Plus this year was what had to be one of the most dazzling seasons of fantastic theater from all over the metroplex. Just outstanding work from both equity and non-equity companies!"

10th Annual Column Awards

  • When: Monday, March 23, 2009, 7 p.m.
  • Where: Irving Arts Center, 3333 North MacArthur Boulevard, Irving
  • Cost: $25 - $51
  • Age limit: All ages

THE COLUMN AWARDS are voted by the subscribers to THE COLUMN, which has close to 12,000 subscribers. These subscribers are made up of actors, directors, Artistic Directors, Producers, area theater critics, publicists, Designers, Choreographers, musical directors, theater staffs, and so on.

But also a huge volume of those subscribers are just theater lovers. Those who attend so many shows all over the metroplex. It is all of these people who make up the voting body of THE COLUMN.

Subscribers vote online selecting their choices from what is called a Round One Ballot, the six individuals with the highest votes then become the six final nominees. The subscribers go back and vote for a second time, only this time they are choosing the actual winner.

Winners will be announced at the 2009 COLUMN AWARDSA GALA on Monday, March 23rd. The glittery gala will be held at the exquisite Carpenter Hall Theater at the Irving Arts Center. The event begins at 6:00 p.m.

Tickets are $25 for general admission only; and $51 for both general admission and the VIP lounge. They can be purchased online or by calling 972-252-2787.

Hey, I know we're all excited about this "new media" video phenom - but when somebody synopsizes a transcript with a list, ping me.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I couldn't hardly wait the 2 extra days for the nomination video to come out. Convinced it was going to be an event not to miss highlighting the hard working performers of the DFW community, i invited neighbors, friends, co-workers and made a real evening out of it. Imagine the shock and embarrasment I felt in front of all these professional friends when the first 5 minutes of the video revealed a vulgar, foul mouthed, unprofessional, flaming address by JG himself. Of course you could only assume it was him the whole time as most of the video was aimed at his stomach and waistline!

This is how all these hard working individuals and this organization should be percieved?? What a total unprofessional and immature representation of our community as well as these dedicated actors. The real winners where those not associated in any way or recognized as part of this group.

One of my aquantances whom e-mailed JG recieved the following reply, and I quote by cutting and pasting.........

"We NEVER take ourselves seriously. That's what people LOVE about THE COLUMN Awards."

I think its important for all those whom worked so hard and recieved these nominatinos and awards to fully understand and know that from the executive director himself of the column, their hard work and recognition is "not to be taken serioulsy", its all about humor.

What a shame. They all deserve more!

There must be another more serious and professional venue in which to recognize these individuals and theater companies. One who's goal is to be serious, dignified and respected for prioritizing and emphasizing the "TALENT" of these actors vs. a popularity constest.

::There must be another more serious and professional venue

There was. It was the Dallas Theatre League. And frankly, it was an energy drain for all that cared. Lots and lots and lots of work for a few people that burned out quickly - with nothing to offer the bulk of the smaller theaters in town.

It too was a pretty cliquey bunch. Each year you'd file down to the awards venue and watch a half dozen folks jump on and off the stage all night and laugh and kiss and swap punchlines to inside jokes. (Yawn)

Even as bawdy and gauche as John can be, I still think his heart is 100% in the right place. Single-handedly he does more for DFW theater (between Gale-Force Gay-Gusts) than any three other media, marketing or publicity houses in town.

No, I don't sift through the 26,600 words a week of sitcom sludge and Broadway dish, but his aggregate audition notices are life-blood to much of the community and are 90% of the readership's reason for being there (um.. Shawn, Tell Miko that'd be a keen Peg feature, btw)

Yeah, I was the first to tune out the above "cry for asbestos" but I still think he's doing a big job, a crucial one --- for the occasional opportunity to supernova in heels. Good on'ya.

And thanks for the text version whoever sent it around - and above.

Thanks for your indight and input. My sole intention of commenting is not to "slam" any particular organization or individual, but to encourage and desire the DFW actor/performer community to be viewed by all 12,000 subscribers as a mature, talented and professional group of individuals. Many live out of town and can't make it to the alleged "classy and elite" Gala awards so the only perception they have to go on is the Video that was produced and aired! These individuals strive to put on quality performances and productions to patrons of all walks of life, it is not, and should not be promoted or percieved as a "Big Girls Gay Club" and you are correct, no one should have to sift through 26,000 lines/words of this nature. If as you say the column is truely interested and a representation of all, both in the professional and patron community, I would certainly hope that the executive director and board become more in tune to how they are perceived by ALL whom subscribe, and also strive towards a more non biased, well rounded business methodology and board member representation. The Vulgar language and sexual undertones and inuindo's have no place in a "public" forum and should be resrticted. If they are what you say and claim, as much as they deal out constructive criticism, they should be able to take it, and take it seriously, after all we are the community and subscribers speaking. Thanks again, this is important to us all

Okay, SO here we go. LOL, Speaking of "paragrahs" etc. Could the 2 of you enlighted the rest of us as to what you are talking about? THus far, at least people on this forum are allowed to converse and share thoughts and ideas ( Pay attention JG, maybe you'll learn something... but doubtful! ) And what are the Scobe awards? HELP!!!

Scott trawls the comments looking for long run-on posts with no whitespace.

Actually, he's looking for new users with "appealing available chick" names but covers by sniping at me and Travis or railing against the aesthetic affront that a huge solid block of text poses.

Every once in a while, I mail him offline with a huge block of Lorem ipsum gibberish, just to keep his spam filter spry.

Oh, and I made up the ScoDo Awards. I fancy myself the false imagery color commentary of the user base around here.

My flare for the dramatic is well known and grudgingly tolerated, as all thespians are at one level or another liars, but they know all the cute girls.

Then go COMMENT! Comment on any review it has had. Comment on the show's page here on Peg:
http://www.pegasusnews.com/organizati...
then find the show running and comment on it.

But most importantly, go sign up for my favorite theatre's email list

As for the whitespace/paragraph break issue.... to keep Scott at bay, put an extra line between parts you want separated OR 3-4 blank spaces at the end of a line to keep it from getting appended to.

Txmedman, we get it. You're not a fan of The Column. Fine to espouse that view, but now you're adding wild unsubstantiated allegations. We have an open discussion policy, but with your recent appearance here, until you take up Jason's suggestion by providing some commentary on the scads of other theater items here, you'restarting to look like an anonymous commenter with an axe to grind.

Far and away the very BEST thing to do is get like minded people to subscribe to Peg, encourage the parts you/they LIKE and let the market work FOR you.

I have heard a couple of similar stories to txmedman. They hear about this big hullabaloo and get blind-sided by its blatantly Gay theming and silly execution. Ya kinda hafta "know" John to get it.

I still proclaim The Column does more good for DFW theater in general than any other entity in town - even if it does nothing whatsoever for me personally. It's a huge task for a coupla volunteers - and they want a few seconds in the spotlight now and then.... in sequins.

In short, you'll never go broke in Dallas theatre putting a guy in in an evening gown.

Move it Milton!

Absolutely not. And sorry for that impression. I simply am trying to learn my way around the DFW area. Not to blow smoke, but Peagasus seems to be a professional and quality organization, As far as awards go there seems to be a monolpoly held by JG and the column. Anything said here, I know for a fact has been expressed to them, and I am in hopes that they will take the ball and run with it. They already have the ground work, and do quite well on reviews and advertising upcoming auditions. Everything in my previous message that was sadly removed was factual and truthful, and the "general public" and theater supporting individuals should know, and be intrumental as a community in changing it or helping to change it. I applaud you for wanting to ensure the accuracy of information posted. I would be happy to cut and paste and email sent from JG himself to multiple individuals re: the "Actions he and the board were going to take". The public voted these people in, they need to know that they can be overridden at the drop of a hat, based on a personal vendetta. Please keep Peagasus the one and only forum in which we can speak honestly and inform those interested what is truthfully going on, Its the only way we will grow as a "Professional Community" And also thanks for being honest and not just removing without cooresponding, I mean no personal or individual harm TMM

I had to double check on a name spelling on the nominees when I came upon these "Comments" for the first time Saturday.

I could comment forever. But I'm not. I have a gala to produce.

All I can say is this. If the video, my actions, my behavior, me being gay, my unprofessionalism, my immature attiude, and so on offended you.

Then just don't support The Column Awards anymore. Don't view their videos. Don't read THE COLUMN. Unsubscribe.

Don't bother with THE COLUMN Awards. Don't vote, Don't attend. It's that simple.

If we offended anyone, we will certainly apologize to that. That was not our intent.

We are not perfect-nor EVER said we were. We learn each year when we we produce this event.

We have our supporters and we have our detractors.

You cannot please everyone. It's impossible.

Finally, I NOR The Column has a "monolpoly" on awards. There is the DFW Critics Forum Awards. Also various theater companies have their own awards as well (Onstage, Runway, Theatre Arlington).

I'm not perfect (DF), I am extremely flawed. I do the best I can, and along the way I will drop the ball, screw up, and do the wrong thing.

Those who support us-love us. Those who don't support us-hate us. It is impossible to please everyone.

I'm only human.

Sincerely, John Garcia

John Garcia, I must openly and whole heartedly say, I am so gald to see a response from you. I am somewhat renowed to see that for the first time, maybe just maybe, you have heard what I am trying to say. YOU REPRESENT US ALL in DFW, the community as well as the actors and performers! and you are seen as an authority and subject matter expert in the arts and theater. The column does a great job of reviews and upcoming events and auditions as I mentioned before. There are forums I agree geared towards various different audiences and a time and place for everything. Rarely does vulgarity and sexual inuindo's meet the needs or interest of a production such as the video, which is seen by ALL. I am equally pleased and hope for those whom choose to stick with the Column that as you say "We are not perfect-nor EVER said we were. We learn each year when we we produce this event." that they can look forward to a much more professional and noteworth video production from your organization. On a side note, Silly me, I read you e-mail and thought that the (DF) in some manner referred to Dallas-Fort Worth. I have had several calls as to what that might be implying between the lines and I can assure you I am not an actor, performer, singer, writer or any such thing. I am a community citizen whom sits in the seats of many productions throughout the area and thinks very highly of them all!. Sorry if there may have been some confusion or misinterpritation. I am representing only myself, not anyone in the theater/arts profession. TMM

I'll keep this brief...or maybe not.

The Column Awards have ALWAYS honored the best of the metroplex. The staff behind The Column Awards devote countless hours of their personal time (without pay) and sacrifice themselves for the sole purpose of giving countless artists their due recognition.

With that said, they've also busted their rears to make sure people enjoy themselves. That's what we call entertainment. Yes different people have different tastes, but they also have a choice.

If you can't have fun doing something, why do it? If you don't like a show, you don't go see it. If you don't like green peas, don't eat them.

Regarding the quote : "We NEVER take ourselves seriously. That's what people LOVE about THE COLUMN Awards."

The quote is meant to show people that The Column Awards are not holding themselves on a pedestal as some high and mighty organization but rather, as an easy going and fun loving group who think there is a worthy group of artists who need recognition, not only by their patrons but also by their peers. Surely it's an honor to be commended by one's own co-workers?

The Column Awards probably aren't for everyone, there is a four letter word for that... LIFE.

As for people thinking that The Column Awards represent the DFW theater area, it's just junk... the hard-working and richly deserving actors, technicians, directors, designers, musicians, choreographers, and theaters are the ones who speak volumes about the quality and professional levels of artistry that are deeply embedded in our midst.

The Column Awards just happens to elevate those deserving individuals for a brief moment to shine.
