Statewide smoking ban in Texas picking up steam
The Texas Restaurant Association voted Tuesday to support the bill proposed in the Texas House of Representatives.
A statewide smoking ban that would supersede bans already in place in various Dallas-Fort Worth area cities is coming closer to reality as the Texas Restaurant Association voted to support the House bill proposed in part by Denton Rep. Myra Crownover. If passed, the bill would ban smoking in most indoor public places, including bars and restaurants.
The bill also has the support of cyclist Lance Armstrong, so anybody opposed to the bill looks like a jerk who's in favor of cancer. Way to put 'em in a bind, Lance!

Except that the bill now sits in the State Affairs Committee. It's new chair is Burt Solomons, the main opponent of the bill from the last session.

After over a year of experience here in Chicago, trying to ban smoking in small neighborhood "shot and beer" bars is pretty useless. Many small bars in my area ignore the ban to keep their customers, neighbors, and local police satisfied. The problems of undesirables being attracted by groups of people outside the bars far outweighs the issue of people peacefully smoking inside a bar, bothering absolutly no one.
