Duncanville election filings are underway

1

Election season is upon us, and some early-bird candidates have already filed for their spot on the May 9 ballot.

As of midday Feb. 16, those filing for Duncanville City Council included current Councilmember-At-Large Dorothy Burton, who will seek re-election, and Anthony Skinner, running for the District 3 seat now held by Paul Ford. Also up for election are Districts 1 and 5, currently held by Ken Weaver and Johnette Jameson, respectively.

Skinner, a Duncanville resident since 1971 who served as a Duncanville city councilman from 2005-07, said he is running for the seat because he wants to make good things happen for District 3. Skinner said that during his time on the council, he worked with other members to enlarge the Duncanville Community Theater, to bring a skilled nursing facility - which created 100 jobs in the city and developed a new business for the tax rolls - and to lower the property tax.

Skinner said he also worked well with the city and other councilmembers to address constituent complaints.

“I want to go back on and get good things restarted,” he said.

Attempts to contact Burton were unsuccessful by press time.

On the school district side, Places 6 and 7 are up for election. They are currently held by Dorothy Wolverton and Deborah Harris, respectively. No one had filed by midday Feb. 16, although both Wolverton and Harris had both picked up candidate packets.

The uniform election date is May 9. Filing for both school board and city council ends March 9. For more information on city elections, contact City Secretary Dara Crabtree at 972-780-5000. For school board elections, call 972-708-2000.

Here's hoping that the dissident councilmembers will win their seats again. Council participants that ask the unasked questions do our great city a wonderful service, and it should not be taken for granted.
