UNT professors track down meteor fragments near West

Two University of North Texas professors have tracked down fragments from a meteor that crumbled and crashed into McClellan County on Sunday evening. After several residents spotted a ball of fire streak across the sky, Ron DiLulio and Preston Starr of UNT began collecting information before setting out at 3 a.m. on Wednesday to track down the fragments. By 5 p.m., with the help of local law enforcement, they located what appeared to be pieces of the described meteor.

According to DiLulio and Starr, the residents saw the large fireball because the meteor was breaking up as it came in for landing. So far the pair have found "large pecan" sized fragment. They plan to return to the area to find larger pieces for studying, reportedly before our atmosphere alters the samples and they begin speaking with southern accents and fill up on kolaches in nearby West.
