The trial of the man accused of killing University of North Texas Sophomore Melanie Goodwin may begin next week, but that has not stopped Goodwin’s supporters from keeping her memory alive through music. On Saturday, March 28, talented musicians and performers will join together at University of Texas Arlington’s Rosebud Theater for a concert benefiting the Melanie Goodwin Memorial Scholarship Fund.

“Melanie loved to sing and perform,” said her father, Glenn Goodwin, “which is why we established this scholarship to support other young people with the same gifts.”

Called “A Life Well Loved,” the concert brings together a program of both familiar and new family-friendly music inspired by the life of Melanie Goodwin. The event features performances by recording artists DeDe Jones and OneWill, with special guest, Grammy-nominated Tim Miller.

Proceeds from the event will help provide scholarships to college students majoring in theater, journalism, music, performing arts, voice or Radio, Television and Film (RTF). The fund also helps underprivileged youth attend community theater classes and experience live theater.

The concert will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the University of Texas at Arlington’s Rosebud Theater. Reserved ticket prices range from $15 to $50 and can be purchased at showclix.com or by calling (724) 653-6903.

“We are humbled by this opportunity to share Melanie’s love of music with others,” said DeDe Jones, the concert’s featured performer and a good friend of Melanie’s. “Our hope is that through this concert we can help other young people experience the same love of music and performing Melanie had.”

Melanie Goodwin graduated from Bowie High School in Arlington and was a sophomore majoring in RTF at University of North Texas when she was brutally murdered on September 25, 2007. The trial of Ernesto Reyes, the man accused of killing Goodwin, begins Monday, February 23, 2009 in Dallas.

DeDe Jones made her first stage appearance at the age of three and she has been singing to awestruck audiences ever since. DeDe’s powerful and penetrating voice makes every song she sings appear effortless. Her rich, soulful style allows her to cross all genres from rock and R&B to country and gospel. With several albums to her credit, DeDe has performed in auditoriums, churches, stadiums and on television around the world. She now sings with OneWill, a band of talented musicians and vocalists who have shared the stage with a diverse collection of musical greats including The Temptations, Molly Hatchett, Pat Travers and Garth Brooks.

Gosh, what a wonderful thing for a father to do in his daughters memory. Parents like this amaze me. I’m not even sure I could function after such a loss, let alone be productive and charitable.
