The Goss-Michael Foundation announces DFW student art contest winners

Joyce Goss, Executive Director of the Goss-Michael Foundation and FOX 4 Anchor Baron James recently announced the winners of the 2009 Identity art contest, sponsored by the Goss-Michael Foundation. The contest was judged by Joan Davidow, the director of the Dallas Contemporary.

The Identity contest – open to all public and private high school sophomores, juniors and seniors 16 years and older in the Dallas/Ft Worth area who excel in photography, drawing, painting and other flat media – allowed students to explore through art expression how they would define their identity in an emotional, physical, cultural or social context. Who are they? What makes them unique? How do other people see them and how do they see themselves? Contestants submitted an original photograph, drawing, painting or other flat media work, from which first, second and third prizes were selected.

First prize for the student art contest, a $1,000 US Savings Bond, went to Greenhill School student David Molay. In addition, Molay’s winning submission will become part of The Goss-Michael Collection, displayed at the Foundation alongside the work of prominent British contemporary artists for the next year. Norman Score, a Brewer High School student won Second Prize, a $750 US Savings Bond; The Hockaday School student Winnie Kuo received Third Prize, a $500 US Savings Bond.

Due to the quality of work submitted this year, Davidow had a hard time narrowing down the 134 contestants to three finalists. Five honorable mentions were bestowed and recipients were awarded a certificate and a Foundation T-shirt. The honorable mentions, ranked in order, were Kelly Drumm, Greenhill School, Caroline Montgomery, Highland Park High School, Rachael Davis, Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, Twyla Shelmire, The Hockaday School and Kaylee Walsh, Greenhill School.
