FC Dallas will face DC United in U.S. Open play-in game
FC Dallas today announced that the team will face defending Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup champions D.C. United in a play-in game for the 2009 tournament at RFK Stadium on Wednesday, April 22 (6:30 pm CT). If FCD defeats United, the team will then face either the New York Red Bulls or the San Jose Earthquakes for the opportunity to reach the Round of 16.
FC Dallas has advanced to the U.S. Open Cup Final on three occasions, defeating D.C. United to claim the 1997 title and finishing as runner-up to the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2005 and the New England Revolution in 2007.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation’s National Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor long-time soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
