$22.4 million in grants to District 30 announced by Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson today announced that communities in the 30th Congressional District of Texas will receive more than $22.4 million in funding from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. The funding was allocated by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the economic recovery package that Congress passed and President Obama signed this month.

“I am pleased to announce that the 30th District of Texas will see money from the economic recovery package so quickly,” Congresswoman Johnson said. “This funding will enable our communities to provide a wider and stronger safety net during this economic crisis, which is affecting more and more of our family members, friends and neighbors.”

The City of Dallas will receive $4,700,469, the City of Mesquite will receive $242,690 and Dallas County will receive $566,867 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. The CDBG program enables local governments to provide affordable housing and create economic opportunities for low- and moderate-income people. The grantee communities are to give priority to projects that can award contracts within 120 days of the grant agreement, thereby ensuring that economic recovery money is put into the economy as quickly as possible.

The City of Dallas will receive $7,187,357 and Dallas County will receive $866,753 from the 2009 Recovery Act Homeless Prevention Grant Program, which will be used to provide short-term rental assistance, housing relocation, and stabilization services for families who may become homeless due to the economic crisis.

Finally, the Housing Authority of the City of Dallas will receive $8,815,293 and the Housing Authority of Ferris will receive $57,868 from the 2009 Recovery Act Capital Fund Formula Program, which will assist public housing authorities in rehabilitating and retrofitting public housing units, including increasing the energy efficiency of units and making critical safety repairs.
