Dallas makes list of 10 Worst Cities To Raise A Family

— Dallas made this list of the "10 Worst Cities To Raise A Family".

The survey calls the 10 cities "a challenging environment", and suggests that parents ask themselves whether they should consider moving before starting a family.

Rankings are based on graduation rates, number of playgrounds, overall crime rates, and cost of living.

Dallas scored No. 5 -- definitely better than No. 10 (Los Angeles), though not nearly as good as No. 1 (Detroit). Texas had three cities: Fort Worth came in at No. 7, thanks to the spill-over effect from Dallas (although Fort Worth gets praised for having more playgrounds), and Houston was No. 8.

Here's what they say about Dallas:

Dallas is the first of three Texas cities to make the list, proving that the Lone Star State isn't a shining example of a place to raise your family. Few playgrounds, a 46 percent graduation rate, and high crime allow Dallas to round out the top five.

I see this ranking as directly associated with other studies pertaining to "most livable" cities. We did not rank high there either.

Hint.... * Few urban parks (note idea to turn Love Field into an urban park was defeated by special interest groups..mention no names) Bicycle and pedestrian friendly? (Nope. Note the Katy Trail stop sign on Knox Henderson - the joggers have the stop sign! Trees? I'm fortunate to live in Highland Park but it's pathetic in general. Public transport. Explain why the biggest airport (area) in the US has no rapid transit to it again? Dallas -Ft Worth high speed train? Why is parking in Downtown Dallas valet or ridiculously expensive or not there? Why does it cost $10 to park near the Nasher for 1 hour?

The one bright spot is the Katy Trail. Yes, I contributed money to light it up - no thanks to the city. I'm critical because I've lived in 3 other urban areas that actually did something about livability. Fort Lauderdale being the last one.

Dallas was a great city to raise a family I can recall and having lived at other places, Dallas is not in good house keeping with the future for kids TODAY... I must reflect to say....

They,...those folks who say they are in control of the values of Dallas,but...it is the kid who becomes and adult I later recognize...and Dallas was a difficult place to raise kids in the 1840s to the the 1880s, While the 1920s and 30s was a great kid raising era, realized in estate sales...A/T, Urban observer.

Dallas is a city without a soul really. Its a great place if your single or a young married couple, but if you want to have kids, it stinks. We have one of the worst school districts in the nation, a city hall and government who doesnt get that parks should be kept up, with trails and bum free, not to mention places and events for children that usually start with "Chuck E Cheeze" and little else.

Didn't read any other comments. I presume this is Dallas proper? Yeah, no $hit. Welcome to suburbs.

As much as we're supposed to enjoy schadenfreude, this actually depresses me.

Yeah, I went to the 'burbs for just this reason, but dang. Do they have to remind me?

Chris - it's not that it has no soul, most teenagers are useless while they're still discovering themselves. It's a younger city... immature and "failure to launch" is written all over this kid. But it has promise.

The Soul of a City is realized in its ability to just hang and grow, this place has grown so large and so big in the past 20 years, another cause and effect should bring it to its next phase.. while where is Dallas going, for the kids, families and fast food culture...A/T,..The Jungle..
