HCG Gallery in Dallas hosts “Graffiti Daze” workshop and exhibit for senior citizens
DALLAS “Graffiti Daze”, an event designed to allow elderly clients of Artreach an opportunity to try their hand at self-expression through creating street art, celebrates the meeting of young and old in the name of creating edgy and meaningful art. As a compliment to the current show at HCG Gallery entitled “Este Es Mi Rumbo” the work created by senior citizen clients of Artreach and several experienced artists will hang in the gallery for the week of February 28th – March 7th.
“Este Es Mi Rumbo” or, as it is translated in English, “This Is My Hood”, is the gallery debut of two young artists from Oak Cliff, Carlos D. Donjuan and Alejandro Diaz. Donjuan and Diaz began their art careers by honing their talents on the streets of Dallas. As founding members of an organization called “The Sour Grapes” - a group of artists who channel the negative influences of their Oak Cliff neighborhood into positive expression and creativity through artistic expressions including graffiti, painting and tattooing and sculpting, the two have helped in developing a support network for aspiring artists in the area. Several members of “The Sour Grapes” will be assisting HCG in the charitable event by offering their services as art teachers or mentors to the senior citizen artists on February 28th.
Artreach-Dallas, Inc. is dedicated to ensuring access to the arts and cultural events in Dallas for economically disadvantaged youth and adults, as well as the disabled and the elderly. In Dallas, it is the only arts outreach organization that specifically targets these populations striving to provide varied stimulating interactions for its clients. Artreach regularly gifts tickets to various concerts, plays, and art exhibitions, and offers workshops and tutorials for both its young and elderly clients when able. Dalta Waggoner, Executive Director of Artreach-Dallas, expressed her excitement over the upcoming workshop and exhibit…“We are thrilled to have a hip gallery such as HCG to host this event. Our organization operates solely on contributions made by individuals, corporations and some government support, so it is always exciting when we have the ability to partner with someone new to help with awareness of our program and potential gifts to our cause.”
A reception will be held on March 5th for the viewing of the art created by the Sour Grapes members and the seniors, as well as the current exhibition, “Este Es Mi Rumbo.” A percentage of the proceeds on all art sold will benefit Artreach.
