New urban-style apartment complex going up on SMU Boulevard in Dallas
Another urban apartment complex is being built -- this one on SMU Boulevard, just east of US 75.
Called the Shelby, it has 55 units, priced at an obscene $1.78 per square foot. What's a typical apartment -- 600 to 800 square feet? For which a tenant would have to pay at least $1,000. Jeez.
The location of this complex supposedly takes advantage of its purported proximity to the DART rail at Mockingbird Station, which they describe as being "near SMU". Really? Mockingbird Station is not particularly close to SMU. And these new so-called urban apartments are definitely not walking distance to the train stop.

Not walking distance to the train stop?
Sure, if you're a cripple.

I dunno. I'm a recovering New Yorker, and back in The City I used to schlep three avenues and 4 blocks (about 15 blocks total) to the subway. And that was before iPods and cell phones (ok, I had a Discman...).

It's less than a half mile from the train station to Yale. I walk it everyday.

well bravo to you clay213, and i hope there are more like you. but i would venture to say that you are unique and that many people around here would find that kind of walk unmanageable
what is the actual walking path from the train to yale? is it along the frontage road of 75? that seems pretty dreadful
alowenberg, wouldn't you say that walking 15 blocks in NY is different than the typical desolate pedestrian conditions in dallas? for me, walkability improves when there are shops, people, distractions

Well, I'd hardly call the 75 service road a "desolate pedestrian condition" - that implies pedestrians may actually walk on it. On the other hand, dodging traffic and coughing on fumes is a distraction, so it's got that going for it. All of this is my way of saying, "you're right, TG" without having to say "you're right, TG"...

There are a number of ways you can go depending one which part of Yale you are going to.
It's easy enough to avoid walking along 75. Not that walking a quarter mile on the access road is going to kill you.
