Art Openings and Events: January ‘09

January 2-4

• Not much in the way of special events or openings this weekend, however do note that the Bill Owens: New Suburbia exhibit has been extended to run until February 21 at Photographs Do Not Bend.

January 9-11

• This is the weekend that starts the New Year in Dallas' art world. There are a million-zillion openings, starting with an opening for three shows at the Bath House Cultural Center, which is always a good time.
• Rusty Scruby has two openings scheduled on the same night! (I wonder which one he plans on attending.) He opens Playing in the Sand at the MAC and at Pan American he's opening two solo exhibits. Scruby is a former student of music and aerospace engineering, so check out his whole-brained work through mid-February at either (or both) galleries. (He is not, as you might think, half Scooby Doo, half Scrappy Doo.)
• It's also the last weekend to catch the Alfred Jacob Miller exhibition at the Amon Carter Museum. The exhibit includes over 85 depictions of Native American societies and fur trappers from the nineteenth century American west.

• Centraltrak is putting on some thing called Checkpoint Dreamyourtopia. It's some kind of art/political event (I think - all the descriptions I've found are very vague). Should be good though, their stuff usually is. You can pop into 500X down the street before or after as well, they are having a reception for their Expo 2009.
• There are shows opening at pretty much every gallery around Dragon Street, so if you're looking for some wining and hopping, that's the place to be. (Just don't break an ankle hopping after all the wining.)
• Artspace 111 is opening their show with charming cowboy portraits as well, for any Fort Worthians reading.

January 16-18

• There is an opening for Christa Diepenbrock at the Blue House Gallery in Allen, featuring small hand-made collages.
• The newly opened Art Hotel Gallery is opening 'Black History Tribute.' After the reception, the exhibit will remain on view by appointment until February 7.
• Decorazon is opening a photography exhibit with work by Kathleen Wilke, Jane Fulton and Wendy Kveck.

January 23-25

• Christa Diepenbrock will be giving an artist demonstration of her collages at Blue House on the 24th.
• Since there isn't a lot going on this weekend, it would be a good time to finish up your art shoe for Decorazon's Farewell Shoes for Mr. Bush exhibit, since the deadline is the 30th.

January 30 - February 1

• The Gallery at UTA in Arlington is opening a show for Michelle Dizon and Vincent Valdez.
• A photography exhibit opens this weekend at the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens. Diane Simons Lovell, one of a few in the world to explore and photograph all seven continents, will have images from Africa and the jungles of Peru on display through the end of March.

On goings and goings on

• A goodie to check out before it ends its run in February is the Mary Lucier video installation at the Amon Carter Museum. (Psst! Admission is always free, and the price of oil is at near record lows, so you are out of excuses.)
• The Goss-Michael Foundation is featuring Sarah Lucas through the end of the month. Lucas' work addresses controversial subjects and incorporates found objects.
