The Collin County Community College District (CCCCD) has partnered with Plano Community Forum to host a range of special events centered around the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and scheduled to revolve around the MLK Day holiday.

Referred to as a "Day of Non-Violence," the free and open-to-the-public events will include:

* the Unity Walk for a Day of Nonviolence (Saturday, Jan. 17) - assemble at 8 a.m. in the parking lot of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church (at 920 14th St. in Plano) for the "everyone invited" walk, to begin at 10 a.m., with a destination of Plano City Hall and culminating in an unspecified (though undoubtedly uplifting) presentation.

* the Power Leadership Breakfast (Monday, Jan. 19) - breakfast begins at 7 a.m. at the Collin College Spring Creek Campus Conference Center (2800 E. Spring Creek Parkway, in Plano). At 8 a.m., there'll be a panel presentation with a "power blog" incorporating individuals at Collin College and community colleges across the nation in "a sharing of ideas, thoughts and stories as a means of creating a flow of dialog and voicing concerns, hopes and tidbits of information." Non-breakfast attendees may participate in the blogging event by navigating here during the program.

* On Saturday, Jan. 17, there'll be a Community Art Contest held at Plano City Hall at 11 a.m.

Says Dr. Cary Israel, Collin College president: "Dr. King preached nonviolence to all of us, but as I look around, there is still violence. Prejudice and hatred should lessen in an enlightened society, and the only way to obtain an enlightened society is through education and discussion. It is good to get together and talk. We can all learn from each other."

Vernon Hadnot, co-chair of the Plano Community Forum/Collin College MLK Breakfast committee, had this to say: "We are so proud to keep Dr. King's vision and dream alive. Through the blogging format, we are able to share the feelings of people in our community and other communities and be reminded that the dream is alive around the nation."
