With the idea of putting our best cultural foot forward (as opposed to in our collective mouths), the U.S. State Department sponsors a traveling documentary film program which exposes people around the world to the best of what our local U.S. of A. filmmakers have to offer.

No word on whether the State Dept. will "encourage" international audiences to watch all 30 of the films in one sitting

Called the American Documentary Showcase, the program pulls together the best of American-produced documentaries (in a competition administered by the University Film & Video Assn.).

The 30 documentaries selected to be shown to people around the world (through State Dept. venues, such as embassies) in 2009 include one (and only one) produced here in Texas: Allen and Cynthia Mondell's look at the State Fair of Texas, A Fair to Remember. The Mondell doc has already received a number of awards, including a 2008 Lone Star Emmy, a Silver Telly,a Cine Golden Eagle and a Silver Remi Award; it was also an official selection of the 2007 AFI Dallas Film Festival.
